Join Thermo Fisher Scientific’s R&D team as a Hardware Test Engineer. You will plan, develop, and execute verification and validation tests for laboratory instruments and automation systems. Working with mechanical, electrical, firmware, software, systems, and quality engineers, you will generate clear, traceable evidence that product designs meet their requirements and perform reliably.
Your work will help deliver dependable scientific products that enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.
Key responsibilities
- Translate hardware and system requirements into test strategies, protocols, acceptance criteria, and traceable test cases.
- Develop and execute verification tests for instrument hardware, electromechanical assemblies, and automation systems.
- Create or improve test fixtures, measurement setups, and automated test tools.
- Coordinate with design engineers to confirm testability, review test methods, and resolve gaps between requirements and test coverage.
- Analyze test results, investigate failures, document defects, and work with engineering teams to identify root causes and verify corrective actions.
- Evaluate product performance, reliability, and robustness using appropriate statistical and failure-analysis methods.
- Maintain accurate test records, requirements traceability, protocols, and reports in accordance with applicable procedures.
- Support design reviews, risk assessments, design changes, and product development milestones.
- Work within cross-functional teams and communicate progress, risks, and test results to project stakeholders.
- Contribute to improvements in test methods, automation, and engineering practices.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, chemistry, bioengineering, biomedical laboratory science, or a related technical field with at least two years of relevant testing experience.
- Experience planning, documenting, and executing hardware, software, or system tests.
- Strong technical writing skills, including the ability to prepare test protocols and reports.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional engineering teams.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience testing laboratory instruments, analytical equipment, or automation systems.
- Experience in a regulated product-development environment, such as IVD or medical devices.
- Experience with reliability testing, statistical analysis, or failure analysis.
- Experience developing test fixtures or automated test systems.
- Experience with engineering test-management or automation tools.
- Knowledge of design verification and validation methods and relevant quality-system requirements.
