Software Engineer – Locate, Payment and Menu

A bit about us

At Nando's, we're on a mission to Create Lasting Happiness, and technology plays a huge part in making that happen.

Behind every great Nando's experience is a lot of clever technology. From helping customers find their nearest restaurant and explore our menu, to making sure they can order and pay seamlessly, our engineering teams build the systems that bring it all together.

We're looking for a Software Engineer to join our Locate, Payment and Menu team. You'll be working on some of the most important parts of our digital customer experience, building technology that supports millions of interactions across our restaurants, website and app.

This is a great opportunity for an engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, working across different technologies and taking real ownership of what they build.

You'll join a collaborative, ambitious team where good ideas are encouraged, engineering quality matters and there's plenty of opportunity to learn and grow.

What's the team all about?

Our Locate, Payment and Menu team looks after three critical parts of Nando's eCommerce platform, helping customers discover, order and pay for the food they love.

Each domain plays an important role in creating a seamless digital experience:

- Locate: Helping customers and our systems understand what each restaurant offers, from available services and ordering capabilities to the information shared with third-party platforms.
- Menu: Bringing our physical menu to life digitally, making sure customers can explore accurate, engaging and up-to-date menus across our website, app and other digital channels.
- Payment: Building and maintaining the services that power payments across our eCommerce journeys, including integrations with our payment providers to make transactions secure, reliable and seamless.

There's plenty of variety in what we do. You'll work on end-to-end projects, building backend services and APIs, connecting them to customer-facing experiences and collaborating with other engineering teams across Customer Digital.

You'll also help us tackle some interesting technical challenges, from handling complex business requirements to building reliable, high-throughput systems that support our restaurants and customers at scale.

The tech you'll get to work with

We believe in using the right technology for the problem rather than sticking to one language or framework.

Our engineering work spans:

- Backend: Rust and Go
- Frontend: TypeScript and React
- Architecture: APIs, microservices and third-party integrations
- Engineering Practices: Automated testing, CI/CD, monitoring, observability and production support

You'll have the opportunity to work across different parts of the stack, deepen your technical expertise and help shape how we build and improve our systems.

While strong experience with Rust or Go is important for this role, we're also interested in engineers who enjoy learning new technologies and aren't afraid to step outside their comfort zone.

What you'll be getting up to

This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll be involved throughout the software development lifecycle, from understanding the problem and shaping a solution through to building, deploying and supporting it in production.

You'll be:

- Designing, developing, testing and delivering reliable software across our Locate, Payment and Menu products.
- Building and maintaining backend services, APIs and integrations that power our digital ordering experiences.
- Working across backend and frontend technologies to deliver features that make a genuine difference to our customers.
- Developing robust, performant systems capable of handling high volumes of traffic and complex business requirements.
- Collaborating closely with engineers, Technical Leads, Product Managers and other teams to design practical, scalable solutions.
- Taking ownership of the services you build, ensuring they're reliable, observable and performing well in production.
- Writing automated unit and end-to-end tests, helping improve the quality and resilience of our codebase.
- Building and improving CI/CD pipelines, supporting releases and troubleshooting issues when they arise.
- Contributing to technical discussions, helping break down complex requirements and providing input into priorities and estimates.
- Working with external technology partners and payment providers to support technical integrations.
- Pairing with other engineers, sharing knowledge and helping the team continuously improve how we work.

We believe in an "if you build it, you run it" approach, so you'll have the opportunity to see the impact of your work in production and take responsibility for keeping things running smoothly.

You won't just be picking up tickets and writing code. We want engineers who ask questions, challenge ideas and actively contribute to building better products.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone with strong software engineering fundamentals who enjoys getting stuck into complex technical challenges and wants to keep developing their skills.

You'll ideally bring:

- Strong hands-on experience developing production software using Rust or Go .
- Professional experience designing, building, deploying and maintaining backend applications or services.
- Experience working across more than one programming language or technology stack.
- A good understanding of APIs, service integrations and modern software architecture.
- Experience writing automated tests and building reliable, maintainable software.
- An understanding of CI/CD pipelines, monitoring and supporting applications in production.
- Experience working in an agile engineering environment, breaking down complex requirements and contributing to technical estimates.
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, with a practical approach to finding solutions.
- The confidence to collaborate with engineers and stakeholders across different teams and contribute to technical discussions.
- A genuine interest in technology, continuous improvement and building great customer experiences.

It would also be great if you have experience with:

- TypeScript and React
- Building customer-facing digital products or eCommerce platforms
- High-throughput or distributed systems
- Payment platforms or third-party payment integrations
- Cloud infrastructure, observability and monitoring tools
- Working across both backend services and frontend applications

You don't need to have worked with every technology or domain listed above. We're much more interested in strong engineers who are curious, adaptable and keen to keep learning.

What your first few months could look like

When you join, we'll give you the support and space to get familiar with our technology, products and ways of working.

You'll start by getting to know the team, understanding how our Locate, Payment and Menu services fit into the wider Nando's digital ecosystem and contributing to features and improvements within our codebase.

As you settle in, you'll take greater ownership of services, become involved in technical design decisions and work on more complex challenges across our domains.

You'll have opportunities to broaden your engineering experience, whether that's working with Rust and Go, developing your frontend skills or getting more involved in systems design, performance and technical integrations.

We want you to grow with us, and we'll support that through collaboration, knowledge sharing, learning opportunities and exposure to meaningful engineering challenges.

Why Nando's?

We're a restaurant business at heart, but there's a lot more technology behind Nando's than you might expect.

Our engineers work on real problems, build products that customers and Nandocas use every day and have the opportunity to see the impact of what they create.

We're big believers in collaboration, learning from each other and giving people the freedom to do their best work.

And while we take engineering seriously, we don't believe work has to feel overly corporate. We want people to enjoy being part of the team, bring their personalities to work and feel comfortable being themselves.

Our values of Pride, Passion, Integrity, Courage and Family aren't just words on a wall. They're part of how we work together and how we treat each other.

If you're a Software Engineer who enjoys solving challenging problems, wants to keep learning and likes the idea of building technology that makes ordering Nando's even better, we'd love to hear from you.

At Nando's, everyone is welcome. Inspired by our Southern African heritage, we know and value the richness that diversity brings to Nando's.

We're committed to creating an inclusive and respectful culture for everyone, including our existing and future Nandocas, partners, suppliers, customers and the communities we're part of.

We work hard to create an environment where every individual is valued, respected and able to flourish, regardless of who they are, their background or their outlook on life.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and will consider reasonable adjustments to help candidates perform at their best throughout the recruitment process.
