Responsibilities for this Position

ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:

As a C5 Software Architect for a next-generation combat vehicle program, you will provide hands-on architectural and technical leadership for a cross-functional engineering team developing and integrating mission-critical software for a vehicle platform. General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) serves as the C5 (Command, Control, Computers, Communications, and Cyber) and software lead across the vehicle platform, integrating tactical networking, sensor fusion, reconnaissance, unmanned systems, and cyber/electronic warfare capabilities.

We encourage you to apply if you have any of these preferred skills or experiences:

- Own containerization, packaging, deployment, and orchestration strategy using Kubernetes (including K3s clusters), Helm charts, Docker/Podman/containerd, private container registries, and automated PXE/network-boot provisioning.

- Lead hands-on design and development of production-quality tactical applications, reusable backend microservices, and TAKX (as well as ATAK, WinTAK, and TAK Server) plugins and services using C# / .NET, Java, C/C++, and Python in a Linux environment.

- Support, customize, and maintain embedded Linux operating system images, board support packages (BSPs), kernel/driver configurations, and container-runtime environments using the Yocto Project (OpenEmbedded, BitBake).

- Partner with Systems and Cybersecurity Engineers to drive architectural trade studies, behavioral decomposition, requirements allocation, and interface definition in Cameo Systems Modeler / MagicDraw (SysML activity diagrams, IBDs, and model-backed SRS/IRS requirements).

What sets you apart:

- Independent technical leader comfortable exercising judgment, autonomy, and decision authority in ambiguous environments to turn operational needs into practical, executable architectures.

- Strong hands-on proficiency in C# (.NET) and Java, along with C/C++ and Python, developing plugins, core services, or tactical C2/situational-awareness integrations for TAKX, ATAK, WinTAK, or TAK Server.

- Practical experience architecting and troubleshooting cloud-native, containerized, and distributed systems using Kubernetes/K3s, Helm charts, Docker/Podman, gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and DDS.

- Strong embedded Linux experience, including building and customizing Linux distributions with the Yocto Project (OpenEmbedded, BitBake) and supporting network boot (PXE/DHCP/NFS) on ruggedized hardware (such as OpenVPX).

- Ability to translate system-level MBSE models (Cameo / MagicDraw SysML) and interface definitions into maintainable, modular software designs adhering to MOSA/SOSA standards.

- Experience integrating software with tactical radios/waveforms, EO/IR sensors, UAS feeds, or Electronic Warfare / Counter-UAS systems using military messaging standards.

- Product-minded architect with a track record of building composable, reusable software services that accelerate customer demonstrations (OTAs) and scale across multiple vehicle and platform programs.

- Strong technical judgment, customer presence, communication, and mentoring skills across multidisciplinary teams.

- Ability to identify responsible uses of approved AI tools (such as MCP-enabled workflows) for engineering productivity, quality, and continuous improvement.

Our Commitment to You:

- An exciting career path with opportunities for continuous learning and development.

- Research oriented work, alongside award winning teams developing practical solutions for our nation’s security

- Flexible schedules with every other Friday off work, if desired (9/80 schedule)

- Competitive benefits, including 401k matching, flex time off, paid parental leave, healthcare benefits, health & wellness programs, employee resource and social groups, and more
