About this role

Job ID: 5174

At Nordea, we know our customers' needs are changing – and we're deeply committed to meeting them with the financial solutions of tomorrow. We're creating an agile environment where we're harnessing the power of technology – one where you can make an impact. So bring your skills, ideas and unique background. With us, you'll find plenty of opportunities to grow and make your mark on something bigger.

We are looking for a Senior IT Developer to strengthen the BX&ST Software Development team in developing and modernising components supporting Cross-border & Swift payments. The positions are permanent and full-time, with hybrid working according to Nordea guidelines.

About this opportunity

Welcome to the BX&ST Software Development team! This area provides solutions that ensure secure, smooth, and reliable payment transactions to Nordea's corporate customers, including reducing risks and enhancing speed and transparency. We follow SAFe principles and our development teams are located in multiple countries.

What you'll be doing:

- Developing and implementing business features in Nordea's Batch, Cross-Border Payments and Swift Tech area

- Contributing to modernisation of our services, including Domain API, microservices, event-driven integration and improving decoupling from legacy platforms

- Improving engineering quality through writing automated regression/unit tests in Java, code reviews, CI/CD improvements, monitoring, and systematic reduction of technical debt

- Working across the full delivery chain: clarify requirements from business, analyse business and system flows, translate business needs into technical design and specifications, implement, test, deploy and support production solutions. This involves working cooperatively with other agile team members and stakeholders

- Supporting knowledge sharing and mentoring in the team, especially by helping less experienced developers understand design choices, integration patterns and production-quality engineering practices

- Using AI-assisted development and automation in a responsible way to improve productivity, quality and learning, and help spread practical engineering practices across the team

The role is based in Helsinki or in Gdańsk/Gdynia. We work in a hybrid work model in accordance with Nordea guidelines.

Who you are

To succeed in this role, we believe that you:

- Enjoy solving technical problems and are motivated by building reliable, high-quality solutions

- Take ownership of your work while also collaborating closely with others

- Are curious and open to learning new technologies, domains and ways of working

- Communicate clearly and value knowledge sharing within the team

- Bring a structured approach to your work while adapting to changing priorities

Your experience and background:

- Required qualifications:

6-8 years of experience with Java development, preferably from large-scale enterprise systems

- Experience with SQL and relational databases, preferably DB2

- Understanding of modern software design practices, such as APIs, microservices or modular design

- Experience with messaging or event-driven integration, preferably IBM MQ and Kafka

- Exposure to build and delivery tooling such as Maven, Git, Splunk, Kubernetes, Jenkins, Docker and CI/CD pipelines

- Fluent in English both written and spoken

- Strong communication skills and proactive attitude

Nice-to-have qualifications:

- Knowledge of SWIFT MX/MT messages (ISO20022 Standard)

- Experience in banking payment systems or another highly critical & regulated domain

- Experience with mainframe or legacy systems

- Experience mentoring other developers or acting as a technical lead, code reviewer or design sparring partner

- Practical experience with AI-assisted development tools, test automation, static code analysis and other productivity-enhancing engineering practices
