Role Summary
The Senior Application Packaging Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end enterprise application package lifecycle across Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM/MECM) . The role covers request assessment, source validation, packaging and repackaging, automation, technical testing, UAT support, controlled release, version management, production troubleshooting, upgrade, rollback, and package retirement.
The engineer must combine strong hands-on skills in MSI, MST, MSIX, Win32 packaging, PowerShell, and PSAppDeployToolkit with disciplined enterprise release practices. The role supports modern Intune-first delivery while retaining SCCM/MECM capability for existing, imaging, and exception-based deployment workflows.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage packaging requests from intake through closure, validating the business owner, technical contact, application source, vendor, version, license needs, target users/devices, operating-system support, deployment channel, testing requirements, and UAT expectations.
• Analyze vendor MSI, EXE, MSIX, APPX, scripts, prerequisites, services, drivers, registry entries, files, shortcuts, scheduled tasks, certificates, runtimes, user context, and application dependencies.
• Create, repackage, customize, and troubleshoot MSI packages, MST transforms, MSIX/APPX packages, and Intune Win32 packages in accordance with enterprise packaging standards.
• Develop standardized install, uninstall, upgrade, repair, detection, and remediation logic using PowerShell and PSAppDeployToolkit or an approved equivalent framework.
• Create and maintain applications in Microsoft Intune , including metadata, publisher and version details, install/uninstall commands, requirement rules, detection rules, dependencies, return codes, assignments, supersedence, and Company Portal availability.
• Create and maintain applications and packages in SCCM/MECM , including deployment types, detection methods, requirements, global conditions, dependencies, collections, content distribution, Software Center publishing, and deployment monitoring.
• Migrate suitable SCCM applications to Intune by validating current source content and commands, creating the .intunewin package, rebuilding detection and requirement logic, and confirming deployment behavior before transition.
• Support applications used in Autopilot and imaging workflows, including base/day-0 applications, post-login provisioning, task-sequence dependencies, and application readiness across supported Windows builds.
• Perform packaging and quality testing in clean virtual machines and managed test devices across SYSTEM and user contexts, including install, uninstall, upgrade, repair, rollback, reboot, application launch, file association, and dependency scenarios.
• Prepare test evidence, release notes, known issues, support information, and rollback instructions; coordinate UAT and resolve defects before production release.
• Release applications through controlled pilot and deployment rings, follow change-management requirements, monitor deployment results, and validate production readiness before broad assignment.
• Troubleshoot failures using verbose MSI logs, Intune Management Extension logs, SCCM client logs, Windows Event Viewer, ProcMon, registry/file analysis, and endpoint telemetry.
• Improve package diagnostics by producing actionable exit codes, status output, and logging that help Endpoint Operations and Service Desk distinguish download, prerequisite, pending-reboot, installer-busy, detection, and installation failures.
• Manage package versions and lifecycle state, including source preservation, naming consistency, version increments, supersedence, pilot/current/retired status, rollback readiness, and timely removal of obsolete packages and assignments.
• Maintain approved source files, packaging scripts, documentation, release artifacts, signed binaries where applicable, and integrity information in enterprise repositories with traceability between reviewed source and released package.
• Support application retirement and restricted-delivery scenarios by removing obsolete Company Portal or Software Center availability, retiring assignments, preserving auditable records, and enabling request-and-approval-based delivery when required.
• Collaborate with Security, IT Risk, Endpoint Operations, Service Desk, application owners, vendors, and change approvers to resolve packaging, compatibility, vulnerability, licensing, deployment, and support concerns.
Enterprise Packaging & Release Lifecycle Ownership
• Intake and assessment: review request completeness, source authenticity, business need, ownership, compatibility, licensing, support model, risk, and packaging complexity.
• Build and automate create a silent, repeatable, idempotent package with reliable installation, uninstallation, detection, upgrade, and logging behavior.
• Validate: complete technical QA on clean systems, supported Windows versions, and relevant endpoint scenarios before UAT.
• Pilot and approve: support UAT, pilot groups, change records, security validation, and release readiness decisions.
• Release and monitor: deploy through Intune or SCCM/MECM, monitor installation status and endpoint logs, and address failures before wider rollout.
• Version and maintain: introduce new revisions using consistent naming and version metadata, configure supersedence or replacement, preserve rollback capability, and keep documentation current.
• Retire: remove obsolete assignments and self-service availability, confirm the replacement or approved request path, and archive the package record.
Required Skills & Experience
• Strong hands-on experience in enterprise Windows application packaging, repackaging, deployment, and lifecycle maintenance.
• Proven expertise with Windows Installer technology, MSI tables, MST transforms, custom actions, merge modules, product codes, upgrade codes, ICE validation, repair behavior, and installation contexts .
• Strong experience creating Intune Win32 applications (.intunewin) with robust, version-aware detection rules, requirements, dependencies, supersedence, assignments, and Company Portal configuration.
• Hands-on experience creating and managing SCCM/MECM applications and packages , deployment types, global conditions, collections, content distribution, Software Center releases, and client-side troubleshooting.
• Advanced PowerShell skills for installer automation, prechecks, post-install validation, registry/file operations, process handling, reboot control, logging, exit-code normalization, and remediation.
• Hands-on knowledge of PSAppDeployToolkit, AdminStudio, InstallShield, Advanced Installer Experience packaging EXE-based vendor installers into silent and supportable enterprise deployments.
• Strong understanding of application prerequisites and dependencies, including .NET, Visual C++ runtimes, certificates, services, drivers, scheduled tasks, environment variables, and file-system/registry redirection.
• Experience with clean-VM testing, UAT coordination, pilot releases, phased deployment, rollback, change management, and production validation.
• Ability to troubleshoot application delivery issues involving download, content distribution, network interruption, installer contention, pending reboots, requirement/detection logic, and application compatibility.
• Strong technical documentation skills covering package configuration, source and version details, install/uninstall commands, detection logic, test evidence, release notes, known issues, support procedures, and retirement history.
Knowledge / Exposure (Good to Have)
• Git-based source control, release branches/tags, pull-request review, CI/CD build validation, artifact checksums, code signing, and package integrity practices.
• Microsoft Graph API automation for Intune application creation, upload, assignment, reporting, and lifecycle management.
• Autopilot, Enrollment Status Page behavior, SCCM task sequences, Windows imaging, and post-login provisioning workflows.
• Nexthink Remote Actions or similar endpoint automation platforms for package deployment, upgrade, removal, validation, and telemetry.
• Application control, certificate management, vulnerability remediation, security review, and enterprise software governance.
• Microsoft Store, winget, LOB, MSIX/AppX, and controlled servicing models for applications that cannot rely on store-based updates.
• Automation-assisted packaging that can generate detection logic, documentation, release notes, test plans, validation, rollback, and compliance evidence.
Key Success Measures
• Packages install, upgrade, repair, and uninstall silently and consistently across supported endpoint scenarios.
• Detection and requirement logic is accurate, version-aware, and avoids false success or repeated installation.
• Releases are traceable from approved source and version through testing, change, pilot, production assignment, and retirement.
• Deployment failures provide sufficient logs and status information for rapid diagnosis and support handoff.
• Current packages remain maintainable, while obsolete versions and assignments are retired without leaving duplicate or conflicting deployments.
