GENELAB FOR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES SUMMARY
GeneLab for Colleges and Universities (GL4U) is a free self-paced online certification program offering space biology-relevant training in bioinformatics to prospective students, educators, and citizen scientists. The GL4U program currently hosts two on-demand courses, GL4U: Introduction and GL4U: RNA Sequencing. The GL4U: Introduction course requires no prior programming experience, and features lecture-style overviews of NASA, Space Biology, Open Science, GeneLab, and short read sequencing as well as hands-on training in basic Unix and R commands using Google Colab notebooks. The Intro course serves as a prerequisite for omics-specific courses. The GL4U: RNA Sequencing course includes lectures on RNA-Seq experimental design, data generation, data processing, and analysis combined with hands-on processing, analysis, and visualization of a spaceflight transcriptomics dataset hosted on the Open Science Data Repository (OSDR) using Google Collab notebooks. Students receive a digital certificate of completion upon successful completion of each course.
