About this role
Tesla is seeking an engineer to develop, deploy, and iterate on SI-powered quality systems that operations teams use every shift. You'll translate on-the-floor pain into software requirements, build and ship the data, model, and UX changes to close the gap, and own adoption on-site. The role spans business process design, SI/agent capability development, data pipeline work, and change management, with quantifiable improvements to Tesla's quality systems as the yardstick.
- Translate business process needs into software design requirements with real context
- Proactively identify gaps between process and system across quality functions; propose tools that give visibility into bottlenecks, inconsistencies, and data gaps
- Translate site-specific gaps into either a configurable fix in an existing capability, a new tool / data source, or a process change the user owns
- Build the data pipelines, model / agent integrations, retrieval and grounding, eval harnesses, and user-facing surfaces
- Deploy SI-enabled quality capabilities end-to-end: spec → prototype → eval → stage → production → monitor → iterate
- Partner with the core platform team on functional and timeline requirements when work belongs in the platform rather than in a single deployment
- Prioritize multiple deployments across departments; provide clear status updates to stakeholders
- Implement existing best practices and develop new ones; feed them back into shared patterns so other sites can reuse them
- Degree in Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Minimum 3+ years in a quality or quality systems role, or in a Forward Deployed / Applied SI / Solutions Engineering role shipping to real end users
- Knowledge of quality system industry standards including ISO 9001, IATF 16949, and AIAG
- Manufacturing or operations fluency (MES, SCADA, CMMS, historian systems)
- Working proficiency in Python and SQL-able to design and run production data pipelines, author ETL into shared systems, and debug database query plans; experience with MySQL, Postgres, or similar warehouse / columnar systems, orchestration tools, and CI/CD
- Understanding of software and database design to work closely with a development team and translate business needs into software-able to write a schema and a data contract, not just a spec
- Comfort with modern SI / LLM application patterns: tool use, structured output, retrieval, prompts as code, evaluation harnesses, agent frameworks, standardized tool / model-context protocols, and cost / latency trade-offs. Can design evals that predict user outcomes
- Data visualization experience, Tableau preferred
- Can run a short shadowing session with a user and come back with prioritized, buildable improvements
- Detail-oriented team player, spots inconsistencies in data, process, and system behavior before users do, and collaborates well across diverse functional groups
