About this role
Job ID: 115776
The Leonardo DRS Naval Power Systems business is a trusted provider of innovative naval gas and hybrid power systems, control technology and support solutions for the U.S. Navy and navies around the world.
Job Summary
Help keep critical naval power systems performing when it matters most. At Leonardo DRS, engineers in Menomonee Falls design, test, and support power conversion, distribution, motor control, and drive systems for naval applications. We’re looking for a Mechanical Engineer II who can turn challenging thermal requirements into practical, testable designs and work across disciplines to see those designs through production.
Thermal performance is more than a calculation: it affects the reliability and capability of equipment people depend on. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to follow your work from design through testing at a Menomonee Falls site with engineering, manufacturing, and test capabilities together in one location.
What You Will Do
- Develop thermal-management solutions for electrical and electronic equipment, from early concepts through detailed design, testing, and production support.
- Estimate heat loads and evaluate conduction, convection, airflow, and liquid-cooling approaches to help components operate within their required limits.
- Use analysis, simulation, and test data to compare design options, identify risks, and recommend improvements.
- Design mechanical features and assemblies that support cooling performance while accounting for packaging, reliability, manufacturability, and serviceability.
- Create and maintain models, drawings, specifications, calculations, test plans, and technical reports.
- Partner with electrical engineering, systems engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and test teams to resolve design and integration challenges.
- Support prototype builds and qualification testing; investigate discrepancies and use what you learn to improve the design.
Education & Experience Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Relevant experience applying heat-transfer and fluid-flow principles to mechanical or electromechanical products.
- Experience with 3D CAD, engineering drawings, and sound mechanical-design practices.
- The ability to plan an analysis, explain its assumptions, interpret results, and validate conclusions with test data.
- Clear communication, curiosity, and a collaborative approach to solving problems.
Especially valuable: Experience with power electronics cooling, forced-air or liquid-cooled systems, thermal simulation, environmental testing, or products designed for demanding operating conditions.
U.S. Citizenship required. This position may require an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
