Principal Electrical Engineer
Job Summary
Iron Mountain Data Centers is seeking an accomplished Principal Electrical Engineer to serve as the global technical authority for utility, high-, medium-, and low-voltage distribution, standby generation, UPS, energy storage, earthing, and power-quality systems. In this role, you will operate as an enterprise specialist and strategic technical leader across new developments, customer deployments, and the existing operational portfolio. You will establish technical direction, govern global standards and specifications, assure high-risk engineering decisions, and resolve complex issues that span beyond individual projects.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
In this role, you will:
- Set Global Technical Direction: Establish design principles, performance outcomes, and decision criteria for utility interconnects, HV/MV/LV distribution, UPS, battery energy storage, earthing, and standby generation across the global platform.
- Govern Global Standards & Frameworks: Own and govern Basis of Design (BOD) requirements, global standard designs, technical specifications, and discipline assurance frameworks; serve as the final authority on precedent-setting deviations and risks.
- Advise Executive Leadership: Partner with VPs, SVPs, and cross-functional leadership on technical strategy, investment trade-offs, capacity constraints, operational risks, and long-term infrastructure technology roadmaps.
- Direct Equipment Strategy & Incident Investigations: Govern technical requirements and product strategy for owner-furnished equipment (OFCI) alongside Supply Chain, while providing top-tier technical leadership for major operational incidents to embed root-cause findings into global standards.
- Build Discipline Capability: Represent the company in strategic customer and industry forums, sponsor a global electrical community of practice, and mentor Senior Engineers and technical practitioners without direct line-management responsibility.
What You’ll Bring (Skills & Qualifications)
The ideal candidate will have:
- Core Experience: Typically 15+ years of relevant experience, including multi-project and multi-market technical leadership across major data center or mission-critical capital programs.
- Enterprise Technical Mastery: Industry-recognized expertise across utility strategy, high/medium/low voltage systems, protective relaying, energy storage, and power quality.
- Governance & Commercial Judgement: Proven ability to govern global approval frameworks and manage systemic risk while balancing electrical resilience, CapEx/OpEx, speed to market, and utility constraints.
- Executive Presence & Influence: Exceptional communication, influencing, and negotiation skills to frame complex engineering decisions for executive leadership, customers, regulatory authorities, and Tier 1 manufacturers.
- Education & Travel: University degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or related technical discipline (Professional Engineer/Chartered Engineer license strongly preferred) and the ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
What We Offer (Benefits)
- Compensation: Competitive salary and executive total rewards packages aligned with your experience level.
- Work-Life Balance: Generous paid time off, holiday schedules, and flexible work options to support personal well-being.
- Health & Well-being: Comprehensive health, dental, vision, wellness, and retirement plans.
- Growth: Continuous learning, technical leadership opportunities, and global career advancement within Iron Mountain.
