About this role
The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
Projects & Initiatives is a newsroom team dedicated to telling stories and serving audiences using innovative reporting and packaging techniques, sometimes sustained by commercial, nonprofit or other funders and advertisers. We prioritize projects that generate broader learnings for the newsroom, whether through new visual formats, audience engagement or reporting techniques.
This desk serves as a nexus between the newsroom, the business side, Research and Development (R&D) and our subbrands, aligning ambitions, priorities and major opportunities across these groups.
Recent examples of the team’s work include explorations of pasta tourism (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/05/19/dining/sardinia-rare-pasta-food-travel.html), the hidden LGBT history of Harlem (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/10/09/realestate/harlem-renaissance-lgbtq.html), the scary future of New York flooding (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/10/15/nyregion/new-york-climate-flooding-solutions.html) and the wildly popular series about the mathematics of everyday life (https://www.nytimes.com/series/math-revealed).
