The opportunity | Open across all of NSW

Build specialist expertise at the leading edge of control, automation and Australia’s energy transition.

We are recruiting Substation Control and Automation Technicians across Greater Sydney, Newcastle, Yass, Wagga Wagga, Tamworth and Orange. You will join a small, highly specialised technical team responsible for the onsite control systems that allow some of Australia’s most important transmission assets to operate safely, reliably and intelligently.

This is not a traditional backend SCADA role. You will work where advanced control technology meets practical field delivery, leading testing, commission and improve onsite SCADA systems, Remote Terminal Units, Intelligent Electronic Devices, PLCs, data networks and special protection schemes. From new substations and renewable connections to high-speed tripping schemes and complex asset upgrades, you will help deliver the control solutions that bring critical infrastructure to life.

We are open to candidates from control systems, automation, electrical, transmission, distribution and other technically complex environments. If you bring strong foundations, practical judgement, project exposure and the motivation to learn, we will give you the training, tools and support to grow into this specialist discipline. This is a highly mobile field role involving frequent travel and extended periods away from home. Team members may travel for approximately 35 to 40 weeks each year to support work across the Transgrid network.

##

The impact you will make

You will provide a complete field solution across the testing, commissioning, maintenance and improvement of substation control systems.

- Commission and test onsite SCADA systems, Remote Terminal Units, substation controls, data networks and special protection schemes.

- Support complex plant and renewable connection work, including high speed tripping schemes and technically advanced control solutions.

- Prepare minor designs, technical documentation, equipment specifications, project plans and practical site solutions.

- Manage control asset replacement activities and work closely with contractors, engineers, customers and other technical teams.

- Share specialist knowledge, improve procedures and provide trusted advice during commissioning, fault response and project delivery.

##

What you will bring

You do not need to arrive with every Transgrid specific skill. We are looking for strong control and automation foundations, field practicality and the motivation to become a specialist.

- An Engineering Certificate, Associate Diploma or equivalent capability in control, automation, electrical or a related discipline.

- Experience with PLCs, RTUs, IEDs, onsite SCADA, industrial control systems or networked automation.

- Exposure to commissioning, site delivery, projects or complex fault finding, supported by sound technical documentation skills.

- A practical and collaborative approach, with initiative, curiosity and the ability to balance field work with detailed technical analysis.

- A current NSW driver’s license and a clear willingness to meet the substantial travel and time away requirements of the role.

##

Bring your best. We will support the rest.

We want you to focus on building your expertise and delivering great work in the field. This role provides a strong package of practical benefits and support, including:

- A company vehicle to support the travel and field requirements of the role

- 16.5% superannuation

- A rostered day off every fortnight

- Field and General-Purpose Allowances

- Specialist training, practical development and support from experienced control and automation technicians

You will also have access to 20 weeks paid parental leave, novated leasing and a wide range of discounts designed to support your wellbeing, lifestyle and career.

Why this role?

Few roles offer this combination of technical depth, practical delivery and direct impact on the energy transition. You will learn from experienced specialists, help solve complex control challenges and contribute to work that can influence industry practice well beyond Transgrid. Your career can grow with the technology, the network and the scale of the projects you support.

##

Be part of something bigger

Safety comes first, and everyone plays a part. You will join a connected team that acts with integrity, shares knowledge and takes pride in delivering outcomes for customers, communities and Australia’s energy future.
