About this role
At Jewson, part of Stark UK, we believe that our greatest asset is our people! We're not just a team; we’re a vibrant community driven by decency, passion, and pride in everything we do. We are committed to creating a dynamic workplace where everyone can thrive and unleash their full potential. If you’re looking for a place where your ideas are not just welcomed but celebrated, you’ve found your home!
We know the trade. In fact, on average you'll find close to 90 years' experience in every Jewson branch!
We are looking for an ambitious, commercially driven Business Development Director to drive new business growth across Scotland and the North of England. This is a Field-based role, working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with regular travel across the region to meet customers and key stakeholders.
This is about more than selling building materials. You will position Jewson as a strategic partner to regional housebuilders, building relationships from the boardroom to the building site and demonstrating how our products, expertise and wider solutions can add value to their businesses.
Using exceptional influencing and stakeholder management skills, you will take ownership of the customer journey, bringing internal teams together to develop opportunities, deliver tailored solutions and secure profitable new business.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Identifying, targeting and winning new business with regional housebuilders and developers across Scotland and the North of England.
- Building influential relationships at every level of customer organisations, from company owners and directors to commercial teams, project managers and site-based colleagues.
- Understanding the different priorities and challenges of stakeholders, adapting your approach to influence decisions and demonstrate the value Jewson can bring.
- Positioning Jewson as more than a building materials supplier, showcasing our wider expertise, products, supply chain capabilities and tailored solutions.
- Working closely with our Project Estimators to develop competitive quotations, pricing and value-engineered solutions that meet housebuilders' requirements.
- Developing compelling commercial propositions that help housebuilders improve efficiency, manage costs and deliver successful projects.
- Creating and developing a strong pipeline of new business opportunities, converting prospects into significant commercial partnerships.
- Leading commercial negotiations, influencing purchasing decisions and securing new contracts that deliver sustainable revenue and margin growth.
- Building strong internal relationships and influencing key stakeholders across branches, sales, estimating, logistics and suppliers to deliver joined-up customer solutions.
- Taking ownership of the full customer journey, from initial engagement and opportunity development through to negotiation, onboarding and successful delivery.
- Identifying market opportunities, understanding competitor activity and developing strategies to increase Jewson's presence within the regional housebuilder sector.
What We’re Looking For
- A proven track record of winning new business and delivering significant commercial growth within a B2B environment.
- A collaborative approach, able to bring together internal teams, suppliers and external stakeholders to achieve shared commercial objectives without direct line management responsibility.
- Experience in construction, housebuilding, building materials or a related industry is preferred.
- Exceptional influencing and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to engage at all levels, from boardroom to building site.
- The ability to build credibility quickly, establish trust and develop relationships with people from a wide range of professional backgrounds.
- A confident communicator who can adapt their style, influence opinions and gain buy-in from senior decision-makers and operational teams alike.
- Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to understand customer challenges and translate these into compelling business solutions.
- Excellent negotiation and presentation skills, with the confidence to challenge thinking and influence purchasing decisions.
- The ability to take ownership and accountability for the customer journey, ensuring opportunities are progressed and delivered successfully.
- Self-motivated, resilient and tenacious, with the drive to open doors, overcome objections and convert opportunities into new business.
- An entrepreneurial mindset, able to identify opportunities, think strategically and operate with autonomy across a large geographical territory.
- Willingness to travel extensively across Scotland and the North of England.
