About this role
We are seeking a student intern to support an investigation centered on the autonomous operations and predictive maintenance of mechanical equipment for future Lunar and Martian habitats, as well as resilient terrestrial smart-building management. The project will employ NASA's likelihood-by-consequences risk assessment framework.
The intern will actively support the operation and expansion of a physical, hardware-in-the-loop habitat analog testbed located in NASA Ames’ SHARP Lab. The testbed features an inverter-driven Air-to-Water heat pump, a closed hydronic loop, and advanced instrumentation that includes data acquisition capabilities and industrial Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
Role Objective: This specific position focuses on physical hardware integration and industrial controls. The intern will be responsible for programming and integrating PLCs (e.g., WAGO, CodeSys). Duties include managing the physical hydronic loop, integrating thermal/electrical sensors, mechanical troubleshooting, and assisting in the safe, physical induction of thermodynamic faults to generate baseline training data for our machine learning pipeline.
