About this role
We are currently looking for a SAN Engineer / Storage Administrator for a 100% remote position supporting a large federal government healthcare modernization project. This role will support the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Data Migration & Syndication (DMS) initiative within the Electronic Health Record Modernization Integration Office (EHRM-IO). The engineer will be responsible for administering, maintaining, and optimizing enterprise storage infrastructure, including HPE, NetApp, Pure Storage, and Brocade technologies, while supporting data migration, backup and recovery, and storage integration across on-premises and Microsoft Azure environments.
The position operates within a remote, multidisciplinary infrastructure and engineering team, collaborating with storage administrators, systems engineers, database specialists, cloud engineers, vendor support teams, and federal stakeholders. The engineer will support ongoing storage operations, capacity planning, infrastructure modernization, technical troubleshooting, and documentation activities to ensure the availability, performance, and reliability of mission-critical healthcare systems.
The candidate must reside within the continental US.
Responsibilities:
- Install, configure, administer, and optimize enterprise Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure, including Brocade Fibre Channel switches, HPE 3PAR, Primera and Alletra storage arrays, NetApp AFF clusters, Pure Storage FlashArray and FlashBlade systems, supporting approximately nine petabytes of storage across VA healthcare environments.
- Monitor and maintain storage capacity, utilization, performance, and availability using tools such as HPE InfoSight, HPE SSMC, NetApp ONTAP, NetApp Unified Manager, Pure Storage Pure1, SolarWinds, and SANnav, producing capacity forecasts, performance metrics, and weekly status reports.
- Administer enterprise backup, recovery, and data protection operations using Commvault, storage snapshots and snapclones, SQL Server backup tools, HPE tape libraries, and Microsoft Azure archival storage to ensure data availability, integrity, and recoverability.
- Support storage infrastructure integration, technical refresh initiatives, and large-scale data migrations across EHRM, BISL, and Azure environments, including provisioning new storage devices, migrating existing workloads, and maintaining secure and reliable connectivity.
- Troubleshoot complex storage connectivity, hardware, firmware, and performance issues across SAN fabrics, storage arrays, and cloud environments, coordinating with vendor support teams to perform root cause analysis, implement corrective actions, and minimize operational disruptions.
- Maintain comprehensive storage infrastructure documentation, including system technical guides, topology diagrams, build and configuration guides, capacity planning reports, and Authorization to Operate (ATO) documentation, while evaluating approved AI-assisted tools for storage automation, predictive analytics, troubleshooting, and reporting.
- Take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to support team objectives and ensure the success of the project.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, or another engineering or technical discipline, or eight (8) years of additional relevant experience in lieu of a degree, with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience.
- Strong hands-on experience administering enterprise SAN and storage infrastructure, including NetApp ONTAP, HPE Primera, HPE 3PAR 20850, HP Lefthand Centralized Management Console, HP Storage Essentials, and HP SN8700 Fibre Channel director switches.
- Experience configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting Fibre Channel SAN environments, enterprise storage arrays, and storage connectivity, performance, and availability issues across on-premises infrastructure and Microsoft Azure cloud environments.
- Working knowledge of enterprise backup and recovery technologies, including Commvault, storage snapshots, snapclones, hierarchical storage management, and storage integration supporting data migration and disaster recovery operations.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose complex infrastructure issues, optimize storage performance, identify operational risks, and implement effective corrective actions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, technical documentation, and collaboration skills with the ability to participate in detailed technical discussions, coordinate with vendor support teams, and develop and present technical reports and briefing materials to stakeholders.
Additional Qualifications:
- Previous experience supporting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other federal government infrastructure environments, particularly data migration, data syndication, and EHR modernization initiatives, with knowledge of database architecture, administration, and security across on-premises and cloud-hosted systems.
- Experience with enterprise storage management and automation tools, including HPE InfoSight, HPE SSMC, HPE 3PAR CLI, HP SSSU, NetApp ONTAP CLI, Pure Storage Pure1, SANnav, and PowerShell, with familiarity in AI-driven predictive analytics for capacity forecasting, performance monitoring, and proactive infrastructure maintenance.
- Experience using AI-assisted tools such as GitHub Copilot to develop and validate storage automation scripts, analyze logs and vendor diagnostics, generate performance reports, and maintain technical documentation, with an understanding of secure AI practices, non-production testing, protection of sensitive infrastructure information and PHI/PII, and compliance with federal responsible AI guidance.
