About this role

InterExchange, a leading nonprofit cultural exchange organization based in New York City's Financial District, is seeking a customer-centric, tech-savvy Controller to run the daily operations of our Finance department. You will lead, develop, and support a small yet highly capable team of accounting professionals. Reporting directly to our CFO, you will work closely together as you turn data into accurate, timely, executive-ready reporting that management and our Board of Directors rely on to make decisions.

We are a self-sustaining, fee-for-service 501(c)(3) with more than $20 million in annual revenue and no development activities or restricted assets to monitor, so your attention stays on strong accounting operations. We are currently moving from QuickBooks to NetSuite, with implementation led by NetSuite's professional services team, and you will be a core member of the project team and take ownership of our NetSuite-based processes once we're live.

Your Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead Daily Accounting Operations

- Oversee the daily activities of the Finance department.

- Lead and support a small accounting team: analyze job functions, evaluate performance, streamline work and help with hiring and training.

- Own financial and operational control of all accounting functions, including general ledger, A/R, A/P, fixed assets, expense reports, payroll recording and cash control.

- Manage A/R aging and collections accurately and on time.

- Oversee bank and credit card reconciliations, cash flow tracking and vendor management.

- Oversee payroll processing, benefits administration and payroll tax compliance, including quarterly and year-end closings, federal and state reporting, and W-2 and other federal form reconciliations.

- Create and champion a customer-service strategy for every client, staff and vendor interaction.

- Serve as a core member of the ERP implementation and migration team, improving accounting workflows and data integrity.

Safeguard Compliance and Controls

- Serve as the main contact for external auditors, prepare audit schedules and resolve findings.

- Lead the preparation of federal and state filings, including IRS Form 990 and New York State CHAR500.

- Establish and maintain controls that protect the integrity of all systems, processes and data.

- Oversee organizational risk management policies and safety compliance across all operations and programs.

- Serve as an authorized account representative for banking, credit cards and vendors.

Turn Numbers into Insight

- Build reliable real-time dashboards, consolidate data for monthly reporting and conduct variance analysis.

- Prepare and share accurate, timely monthly financial management, annual audit and budget reports.

- Develop and maintain cash flow forecasting models to support liquidity planning and financial stability.

- Respond to financial inquiries from the CEO, Board of Directors and Program Management, and deliver on CFO assignments for reporting and budgeting.

- Take part in a wide variety of special projects and reporting.

Your Qualifications and Competencies:

Experience and education

- 7 to 10 years of solid experience in accounting operations, internal controls, compliance and historical financial accuracy.

- 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience managing a small accounting team in a similar, small organization.

- 2 to 5 years of experience administering or supporting financial ERP systems. NetSuite experience is strongly preferred.

- Bachelor's degree in accounting, or equivalent experience. CPA certification is a plus.

Skills and strengths

- Strong working knowledge of accrual-based accounting, including general ledger, A/P, A/R, payroll, income tax and banking.

- Familiarity with New York State nonprofit compliance requirements.

- Cash management experience, including web-based cash collection systems.

- Advanced computer skills, comfort with cloud-based platforms, and the ability to design computer-based solutions and financial processes.

- Strong management, team-building and leadership skills, and a team player who makes the most of others' strengths.

- Sound accounting judgment that weighs unique circumstances and input from colleagues outside Finance.

- A forward-thinking, flexible and proactive approach, with strong communication and negotiation skills.

- Advanced presentation skills: you can explain financial concepts in practical terms and turn datasets into clear, executive-ready visual presentations.

- Advanced technical skills and comfort with cloud-based platforms, with the ability to envision and design technology-driven solutions and financial processes.

Please note that this is an outline of the essential functions and requirements of this position and is not intended to be exhaustive.
