About this role
Job Title: Field Service Engineer Semiconductor Equipment Job Description The Field Service Engineer supports advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment in a high-volume cleanroom fabrication environment. In this highly technical, hands-on role, you serve as the primary technical resource for equipment reliability, fault isolation, root cause analysis, and restoration of complex process tools that are critical to semiconductor production. You troubleshoot across electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, vacuum, and control systems using schematics, diagnostic software, system logs, and test equipment to minimize downtime and maximize tool performance. This position is ideal for engineers and technicians who enjoy real, hands-on troubleshooting on sophisticated automation and manufacturing systems in a fast-paced environment where equipment uptime is essential. Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex semiconductor process equipment that includes electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, pneumatic, vacuum, and control system components.
- Perform advanced fault isolation and root cause analysis using electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, ladder logic, control system documentation, software diagnostics, and system alarms.
- Use diagnostic tools such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, process monitoring tools, and diagnostic software to identify, analyze, and resolve equipment failures.
- Repair or replace critical components including motors, servo systems, sensors, PLC I/O components, power supplies, relays, valves, pumps, vacuum components, controllers, and motion control hardware.
- Execute preventive, predictive, corrective maintenance, and calibration activities in alignment with equipment specifications and manufacturing requirements.
- Support equipment installation, startup, commissioning, qualification, software upgrades, and acceptance testing to ensure tools are ready for production.
- Analyze equipment performance data to identify trends, improve reliability, reduce recurring failures, and increase overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
- Respond rapidly to equipment alarms, process excursions, and unscheduled downtime events, driving timely and effective issue resolution to support production goals.
- Collaborate closely with process engineers, manufacturing engineers, operators, maintenance teams, and other stakeholders to resolve complex technical issues impacting production.
- Maintain accurate and detailed service documentation, including troubleshooting steps, corrective actions, failure analysis reports, and maintenance records.
- Complete equipment-specific technical training and continuously develop expertise in semiconductor process systems and emerging technologies.
- Apply structured root cause analysis methodologies, using fault isolation, diagnostic data, alarm histories, and equipment logs to prevent repeat issues.
- Support high-uptime manufacturing operations by prioritizing tool uptime, safety, and quality in all service activities.
- Work on automated material handling systems (AMHS) that transport wafer pods (FOUPs) throughout the fab between process tools, stockers, and manufacturing areas, ensuring reliable operation of the automated transportation network.
Essential Skills
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred.
- Strong understanding of electrical systems, including power distribution, motors, sensors, relays, control circuits, and industrial automation systems.
- Proven ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, assembly drawings, and technical manuals.
- Advanced electrical troubleshooting skills for electrical, electromechanical, and control systems.
- Experience using diagnostic equipment such as digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, process monitoring tools, and other electronic test instruments.
- Experience troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining complex automated or electromechanical equipment in semiconductor, industrial manufacturing, automation, aerospace, defense, automotive, or other high-tech environments.
- Understanding of pneumatic, vacuum, motion control, and robotics systems, including servo systems and precision mechanical assemblies.
- Ability to perform structured root cause analysis using fault isolation techniques, diagnostic data, alarm histories, and equipment logs.
- Demonstrated ability to identify failure mechanisms, implement effective corrective actions, and prevent repeat issues.
- Working knowledge of PLC-based control systems, motion control systems, HMIs, industrial networks, and automated manufacturing equipment (preferred but strongly beneficial).
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to replace, align, and verify mechanical assemblies and precision components.
- High level of technical coachability with the ability to quickly learn complex equipment platforms and absorb technical training.
- Consistent adherence to procedures with a strong focus on safety, quality, and tool uptime.
- Dependable and responsive, able to perform effectively during critical, production-impacting events.
- Customer service mindset with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working directly in semiconductor fabs or other highly automated manufacturing environments.
- Hands-on experience as a maintenance technician, field service technician, or service engineer on complex industrial or semiconductor equipment.
- Familiarity with vacuum systems, robotics, process equipment, servo systems, and precision mechanical assemblies.
- Experience supporting high-uptime manufacturing or production environments where equipment reliability is critical.
- Exposure to automated material handling systems (AMHS) or similar automation platforms that move materials between process tools and storage systems.
- Strong service orientation, including experience in field service, repair, and preventive maintenance roles.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities, respond quickly to changing production needs, and work effectively under time pressure.
- Comfort working in a highly technical, documentation-driven environment where accurate records and adherence to procedures are essential.
