About this role

ABOUT ASTROBASE SPACE TECHNOLOGIES Astrobase is a pioneering spacetech startup founded by prominent Senior ISRO scientists and IIT Bombay alumni with over 20 years of experience in designing, manufacturing, testing and flying advanced Cryogenic Launch Vehicles. Driven by a vision to make India a Space tech powerhouse, we are developing innovative launch vehicles that will transform space exploration. At Astrobase, you’ll be part of a team creating history in the Indian space industry. Our goal is to become the first private space company from India to land on the moon economically.
ABOUT THE ROLE As Technical Assistant, you will support the turbomachinery engineers in getting every turbopump built correctly and ready for test. You will identify and clear manufacturing and assembly non-conformances, verify assembly stack-ups and critical clearances, and keep complete build and test records for each turbopump.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Identify manufacturing and assembly non-conformances (NCs) for each turbopump hardware item, raise NC reports and work with engineers, quality and suppliers to clear them. 2. Review incoming parts and inspection reports against drawings before assembly. 3. Participate in turbopump assembly and ensure the correctness of the assembly stack-up against drawings and build procedures. 4. Record and report critical clearances for each turbopump assembly, including running clearances, runout, axial float and bearing preload, and flag any deviation to the design engineers. 5. Witness and verify rotor balancing results against the specified balance grade. 6. Coordinate with technicians, the shop floor and suppliers to keep builds on schedule. 7. Support integration of turbopumps on the test stand and test-day activities, and record findings from post-test teardown. 8. Maintain assembly travellers, build records and traceability for every turbopump, and prepare build data for PDR, TDR and VDR.
REQUIREMENTS 1. Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or ITI (Fitter, Machinist or equivalent). 2. 5–15 years in precision assembly, inspection or quality of rotating machinery (pumps, turbines, compressors, aero engines or similar). 3. Strong experience identifying, documenting and closing manufacturing and assembly non-conformances. 4. Ability to read engineering drawings with GD&T and to understand fits, tolerances and assembly stack-ups. 5. Skilled with precision measurement (micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators) and reading CMM reports. 6. Disciplined, detail-oriented and strong at documentation and reporting.
GOOD TO HAVE • Aerospace or defence hardware experience, including AS9100 or similar quality systems. • Knowledge of rotor balancing and ISO 21940 balance grades. • Cleanroom or oxygen-clean assembly experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT This role is part of the Turbomachinery Department and is based at our factory in Dobaspet, with occasional travel to the test facility for testing.
