About this role
Our client, a commercial electrical contractor with a steady pipeline of large-scale projects, is hiring a Project Manager to take full ownership of commercial electrical work in Detroit, Michigan. You will carry each project from budgeting and early planning through installation, commissioning, and final turnover, with dedicated estimating and BIM/VDC resources supporting you.
This is an on-site role for a PM who comes from the self-perform side of the trade: someone who knows commercial electrical systems, runs budgets, schedules, field operations, and client relationships independently, and protects quality, safety, and profitability on every job.
What You Will Do
- Lead commercial electrical construction projects from budgeting and initial planning through installation, commissioning, and final turnover.
- Build and maintain schedules, procurement plans, staffing requirements, and cost forecasts that keep projects on time and profitable.
- Direct the work of superintendents, foremen, electricians, vendors, subcontractors, and general contractors throughout execution.
- Review contracts, electrical drawings, and technical specifications to confirm project requirements and catch design conflicts early.
- Own change orders, RFIs, submittals, material procurement, billing, and project documentation.
- Track job costs, labor productivity, cash flow, and budget variances, and take corrective action when numbers drift.
- Partner with estimating, preconstruction, BIM/VDC, and field teams to keep design, pricing, and construction aligned.
- Solve design conflicts, installation challenges, material delays, and scheduling issues before they disrupt the work.
- Run project meetings and keep clients, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders clearly informed.
- Uphold contractual obligations, workmanship standards, and jobsite safety requirements.
Requirements
- 5+ years of project management experience with a commercial electrical contractor.
- Required: prior experience with a self-performing commercial electrical contractor.
- Track record of managing commercial electrical projects from initial planning through completion.
- Solid command of electrical installations, construction sequencing, field supervision, and commercial building systems.
- Hands-on experience with project budgets, schedules, procurement, workforce allocation, cost forecasting, billing, and change orders.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, technical specifications, contracts, and construction schedules.
- Experience coordinating preconstruction, estimating, BIM/VDC, and field operations.
- Working knowledge of electrical labor productivity, material costs, and project financial controls.
- Proficiency with construction project management software and Microsoft Office.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Preferred: experience with healthcare, higher education, manufacturing, industrial facilities, or other complex commercial projects.
Important Qualification: Candidates must have direct project management experience with a self-performing commercial electrical contractor. Experience limited to electrical design, consulting, coordination, or subcontractor administration will not meet the core requirements.
