About this role
Global Practice Leader of Mission Critical Engineering
Overview
Amentum’s Digital Infrastructure Group provides engineering, construction, modernization and lifecycle services for complex data center and communications environments. The Global Practice Leader of Mission Critical Engineering will lead the mission-critical engineering organization as an accountable business executive—responsible for commercial growth, engineering delivery, organizational capability and the financial performance of the group.
Success requires a leader who combines deep consulting-engineering credibility with the ability to win work, lead senior customer relationships, build a scalable multidisciplinary team and consistently convert backlog into profitable, high-quality delivery. The lead will work in close partnership with Amentum’s construction, EPC, commissioning and other Digital Infrastructure leaders.
Responsibilities
- Own the engineering group’s growth strategy, annual sales and bookings plan, account priorities, market positioning and qualified opportunity pipeline; translate business goals into executable pursuit plans.
- Personally develop and maintain senior technical relationships with hyperscale operators, colocation providers, developers, technology partners and other strategic clients; act as executive sponsor for key accounts and pursuits.
- Lead pursuit qualification and bid/no-bid recommendations, capture strategy, teaming, proposal development, fee strategy and commercial negotiations in coordination with business development, legal, contracts and finance.
- Build a disciplined opportunity-to-award process that prioritizes profitable, deliverable work; expand recurring relationships and cross-sell engineering with design-build/EPC, construction, retrofit and commissioning capabilities.
- Be accountable for the engineering group’s operating plan and P&L results, including bookings, revenue, gross margin, operating profit, project financial performance and forecast accuracy, within Amentum’s delegated authorities.
- Develop the annual budget and rolling forecasts; lead monthly business reviews of pipeline, funded backlog, earned revenue, margin, labor utilization, staffing demand, project exposure and corrective actions.
- Establish pricing, estimating, scope definition and project financial controls to protect fee realization and margins; govern change management, cost-to-complete reviews, subcontractor performance and recovery of out-of-scope services.
- Manage staffing mix, billable utilization, overhead, subconsultant use and investment priorities; partner with finance and contracts on unbilled work, billing cadence, receivables and working-capital performance.
- Lead directors, engineering managers, discipline leads and project teams delivering complex electrical, mechanical and multidisciplinary design for new-build, expansion and active-site modernization programs.
- Set expectations for engineering quality, technical reviews, scope control, schedule reliability, safety, professional licensure compliance and client satisfaction; hold delivery leaders accountable for project outcomes.
- Provide executive oversight of mission-critical electrical infrastructure (utility service, generators, UPS, switchgear, distribution and controls) and mechanical systems (cooling plants, HVAC, air and liquid cooling, heat rejection and associated controls).
- Ensure designs are coordinated with procurement, construction means and methods, commissioning, operability and turnover; resolve cross-discipline risks and elevate material technical or commercial issues promptly.
- Institutionalize standards, peer reviews, lessons learned, BIM/digital design practices and productivity improvements that increase consistency, speed and design quality across projects and regions.
- Build and lead a high-performing organization with clear roles, leadership succession, recruiting plans, performance standards and career development for engineering and project management personnel.
- Balance workload, geographic capacity, specialized expertise and delivery partners against booked and forecast demand; scale the group without compromising utilization, technical quality or profitability.
- Create a culture of ownership, client service, collaboration and disciplined execution, with visible commitment to safety, ethics and continuous improvement.
- Represent the engineering group in operating reviews, strategic planning and major customer engagements; communicate business performance, risks, resource needs and actionable decisions to senior leadership.
- Coordinate with construction/EPC, commissioning, preconstruction, project controls, finance, legal and talent leaders to establish clear scopes, handoffs and accountability across integrated project delivery.
- Exercise commercial, staffing and investment authority consistent with Amentum policies and approval limits; escalate exceptions while remaining accountable for business outcomes.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline; active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in mission-critical/data center engineering, including meaningful leadership experience in an engineering consulting, architectural/engineering (A/E) or MEP consulting organization.
- Demonstrated success originating and growing engineering services revenue, leading complex pursuits, winning strategic accounts and converting a sales pipeline into profitable bookings and backlog.
- Prior P&L leadership or substantial, directly accountable business-unit/portfolio financial responsibility, including revenue, margin, staffing, budgets and forecasting.
- Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering leaders and delivering large, complex hyperscale mission-critical programs, including projects or campuses at the 100 MW+ scale.
- Executive-level technical understanding of critical power and mechanical/cooling systems and the interfaces among design, construction, testing, commissioning and operations.
- Strong judgment in commercial risk, contracts, client negotiations, organizational design and leadership communication.
- Must be able to work for any US Employer without current or future visa sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience scaling multi-office or internationally distributed engineering teams; success supporting both stand-alone consulting engagements and integrated EPC/design-build delivery.
- Deep relationships with major hyperscale and colocation clients; familiarity with high-density AI infrastructure, retrofit/modernization programs and evolving cooling technologies.
- Experience with engineering quality systems, Revit/AutoCAD/BIM workflows, standardized design practices, portfolio project controls and commissioning/turnover requirements.
