About this role
In nuclear projects, the sourcing decision is never simply about obtaining a quotation. It is about creating confidence: confidence that the supplier can meet the specification, protect quality, sustain capacity, deliver to programme, and uphold the traceability and discipline required by a nuclear application.
The Front End Sourcing Specialist – Nuclear leads that work at the earliest and most influential stage of major project development.
Acting as the sourcing project lead for budgetary Major Projects—typically exceeding $1 million—the role manages the end-to-end RFQ/RFP process for critical engineered commodities, including castings, fabrications, baseplates and forgings.
This is a strategic, cross-functional role combining commercial sourcing, nuclear supply-chain awareness, supplier capability assessment and project integration. The successful candidate will translate project requirements into robust sourcing strategies, align suppliers to Flowserve’s quality and delivery expectations, and provide the business with credible, competitive and executable supply solutions.
Key Responsibilities
The Front End Sourcing Specialist – Nuclear will:
- Lead sourcing events for budgetary Major Projects as requested by Flowserve sites and business units, ensuring timely execution through established sourcing workflows and governance.
- Own the complete RFQ/RFP process for assigned scopes, from requirement clarification and bidder selection through quotation analysis, negotiations, recommendation and commercial close-out.
- Develop clear sourcing packages for technically complex engineered materials, ensuring requirements for scope, quality, documentation, inspection, traceability, testing and delivery are accurately reflected in supplier enquiries.
- Source and evaluate suppliers for castings, fabrications, baseplates and forgings, balancing the full value equation: Safety, Quality, Capacity, Delivery, Cost and nuclear compliance.
- Partner closely with Engineering, Quality, Project Management, Estimation, Manufacturing, Planning and site procurement teams to clarify requirements, resolve bid ambiguities and ensure that sourcing decisions are technically sound and commercially competitive.
- Lead commercial negotiations with suppliers to achieve the best overall value for Flowserve, including pricing, lead-time, payment terms, capacity commitments, risk mitigation, warranty and contractual obligations.
- Assess supplier suitability for nuclear-related applications, including manufacturing capability, quality systems, traceability, documentation discipline, special-process controls and the ability to comply with required customer, regulatory and Flowserve flow-down requirements.
- Ensure sourcing recommendations reflect the global category strategy, approved supplier landscape, preferred sourcing channels and broader business objectives.
- Identify supply, supplier, quality, capacity, geopolitical, delivery and commercial risks early in the project lifecycle; establish mitigation actions and escalate significant exposures through the appropriate management channels.
- Prepare clear sourcing recommendations and decision support for project teams and leadership, including bid comparisons, supplier risk assessments, total-cost considerations and recommended negotiation or award strategies.
- Where applicable, negotiate and finalise commercial agreements such as price lists, project-specific supply agreements, framework agreements and teaming agreements.
- Support supplier development activity by identifying capability gaps, qualification needs and opportunities to strengthen Flowserve’s nuclear supply base for future project demand.
- Maintain complete, accurate and auditable sourcing documentation in accordance with Flowserve policies, procedures, delegated authorities and applicable compliance requirements.
Scope of Responsibility
The role will act as the front-end sourcing lead for strategic, high-value nuclear and nuclear-adjacent opportunities. The specialist will typically manage sourcing activity for major budgetary projects exceeding $1 million, with particular responsibility for critical long-lead and engineered components.
The position requires the ability to operate across multiple sites, business units and suppliers, often before a firm order is received. Success depends on turning uncertain early-stage requirements into a sourcing plan that is commercially credible, technically robust and executable when the project moves forward.
Key Interfaces
The Front End Sourcing Specialist – Nuclear will work closely with:
- Global Category Management
- Nuclear and Engineered Pumps business leadership
- Project Management and Major Projects teams
- Engineering, Quality and Supplier Quality
- Estimation and Commercial teams

Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Engineering, Business, Manufacturing or a related discipline; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
- Significant experience in strategic sourcing, procurement, supplier management or project supply chain within a complex engineered-manufacturing environment.
- Experience sourcing engineered commodities such as castings, forgings, machined components, fabrications, pressure-containing parts, baseplates or similar critical materials.
- Demonstrated experience leading competitive RFQ/RFP processes, conducting commercial negotiations and developing supplier award recommendations for high-value or technically complex scopes.
- Experience within nuclear, power generation, oil and gas, defence, aerospace, chemical processing or another highly regulated industry is strongly preferred.
- Working knowledge of supplier qualification, quality-system expectations, traceability, documentation packages, inspection and test requirements, and risk management for critical engineered supply.
- Familiarity with nuclear quality requirements and standards—such as ASME Section III, NQA-1, ISO 19443 or equivalent customer and regulatory requirements—is highly desirable.
- Strong commercial judgement, with the ability to evaluate total value rather than unit price alone.
- Proven ability to influence cross-functional teams, operate with limited supervision and manage multiple complex sourcing events simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present sourcing recommendations and risk positions clearly to senior stakeholders.
Critical Competencies
The successful candidate will bring a rare combination of commercial instinct and technical discipline.
