About this role
Description
Amazon is building a new payment method, and we need a credit risk leader to shape it from the ground up. As a Risk Manager III within our Payments organization, you will own the credit origination strategy and portfolio lifecycle management for a high-growth consumer financial product. You will design data-driven underwriting policies, run champion/challenger experiments, and translate portfolio analytics into action before deterioration reaches the P&L. Working closely with partners in finance, technology, and product teams, you will balance profitable volume growth with loss containment and customer experience. If you are a self-starter who thrives on building new capabilities in ambiguous environments, this is your opportunity to define how credit risk is managed at Amazon.
Key job responsibilities
- Design and maintain the end-to-end origination policy, including score cutoffs, decision trees, income verification rules, initial line assignment, and segment-level pricing, then lead periodic calibration of each component.
- Own the portfolio lifecycle strategy by defining proactive and reactive line adjustments, transactional authorization rules, and preventive treatments for early-stage delinquent accounts before they enter collections.
- Build and execute the champion/challenger testing program for origination, including test cell design, sample sizing, maturation windows, swap-in/swap-out analysis, and reject inference that feeds the modeling team.
- Monitor the full origination funnel and portfolio health through vintage analysis, roll rates, transition matrices, and 12-to-24-month loss and balance forecasts, reconciling monthly against actuals and escalating early warning signals to credit and risk committees.
- Partner with legal, regulatory, finance, and technology teams to interpret applicable laws and business policies, represent credit risk programs to senior leaders and external auditors, and align risk reduction strategies with the broader organizational framework.
A day in the life
You will start your morning reviewing portfolio performance dashboards, checking approval rates, First and Second Payment Default trends, and vintage loss trajectories against established thresholds. From there, you will join working sessions with the modeling team to assess experiment results and calibrate line assignment strategies, then coordinate with commercial and operations partners to align origination targets with risk appetite. You will prepare committee-ready narratives, reconcile the monthly risk P&L against forecast, and apply your judgment to trade-offs between short-term volume goals and long-term portfolio health.
About the team
We are the first team at Amazon building a new business, and we sit within the Payments organization. Today the team is small by design, which means you will have an outsized role in shaping our credit risk function, processes, and culture from day one. Our closest partners span finance, technology, and commercial teams, and together we are investing in creating a world-class underwriting and credit risk capability. If you want to help define something new at Amazon and see your work directly reflected in the product, we would love to hear from you.
