About this role

Fabrication of Advanced Optical Structures for Aerospace Applications

This component focuses on the experimental fabrication of advanced optical structures and devices in a cleanroom environment. Tasks may include testing these structures using specialized optical measurement systems and possibly some optical modeling, but will primarily involve nanofabrication of the prototype structures/devices. The intern will gain experience with processes such as thin-film deposition, etching, lithography, and other fabrication techniques, including the handling and processing of wafer substrates. The optical structures/devices developed will be designed and tailored for aerospace applications.

Requirements:

-> Currently or recently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in a STEM field (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related discipline)
-> Basic familiarity with laboratory practices and safety
-> Experience/course work that translates to nanofabrication and wafer metrology.
-> Comfort working with experimental data and drawing meaningful conclusions from results
-> Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn new instrumentation, techniques, and protocols

Nice-to-Haves:
-> Experience with micro/nanofabrication techniques such as photolithography, thin-film deposition, spin coating, or etching through coursework or academic research work (or industry)
-> Prior cleanroom experience or familiarity with cleanroom environments and protocols
-> Prior exposure to cleanroom metrology techniques (e.g., profilometry, Atomic Force Microscopy, optical microscopy, ellipsometry, etc.)
-> Experience using coding or software for data analysis and/or visualization, especially for spectroscopic or similar data types, such as with MATLAB, Excel, Python, Origin, etc.
-> Background or coursework in optics, photonics, materials science, spectroscopic methods, micro/nanofabrication, or textiles
-> Familiarity with scientific writing or reporting
