About this role
As part of Tesla's EPC Team, you will help design, collaborate on, and build the first home of Optimus while supporting critical vehicle programs and manufacturing initiatives. The Staff Construction Manager is a senior individual construction contributor responsible for owning and delivering large-scale industrial and manufacturing construction projects from design through completion.
This role is designed for an experienced construction professional who thrives on complex builds, technical problem-solving, and driving projects to execution. You will apply extensive industrial construction experience across civil, structural, architectural, and MEP disciplines to deliver fully constructible projects that meet factory requirements, site constraints, and aggressive timelines. You will work directly with Engineering, Procurement, Quality, Commissioning, Manufacturing Engineering, and Production to integrate design, procurement, and field execution.
Success in this role comes from construction expertise, ownership, urgency, and the ability to get large projects built. This is a hands-on project execution position, not a traditional people-management role. You will lead through technical expertise, influence, and accountability while directing contractors, subcontractors, and self-perform teams to deliver Tesla's most critical infrastructure projects.
- Constructability & Design Integration: Lead multidisciplinary constructability reviews across civil, structural, architectural, and MEP scopes. Drive fully coordinated, constructible drawing sets by resolving design gaps, field conditions, site constraints, and installation conflicts before construction
- Project Controls & Estimating: Validate project estimates at the BOM level, establish scope completeness, and develop project schedules supporting funding approvals, procurement, and execution
- Budget & Schedule Ownership: Own project’s cost controls, forecasting, schedule performance, and change management. Identify risks and drive mitigation strategies to protect approved budgets and critical milestones
- Procurement & Buyout: Prepare RFQs, bid packages, and detailed scopes of work. Lead buyout, review contractor scopes, evaluate proposals, and identify long-lead procurement requirements
- Industrial Construction Execution: Drive complex construction projects from mobilization through substantial completion and closeout. Coordinate multiple trades, contractors, subcontractors, and self-perform activities while resolving technical and field execution challenges
- Field Leadership, Safety & Quality: Maintain a strong field presence to verify conditions, oversee installation quality, enforce safety standards, and resolve construction obstacles. Ensure equipment installations, anchoring, and utility tie-ins meet project requirements
- Cross-Functional Integration: Work directly with Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Quality, Commissioning, and Plant Operations to align construction activities with factory priorities and operational requirements
- Execution & Problem Solving: Independently drive decisions, manage scope changes, resolve conflicts, and remove obstacles. Maintain momentum across competing priorities and aggressive project timelines
- Project Completion & Handover: Own delivery through commissioning coordination, substantial completion, and operational handover, ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to required quality standards
- Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field or equivalent experience; preferred minimum of 15 years of progressive construction experience
- Extensive experience building industrial, manufacturing, factory, or large-scale infrastructure projects
- Demonstrated experience executing large, complex construction projects involving multiple disciplines, trades, contractors, and evolving project requirements
- Expert knowledge across civil, structural, architectural, MEP, and hazardous materials scopes, with the ability to read, interpret, and reconcile multidisciplinary drawings and specifications
- Proven constructability, estimating, scheduling, budgeting, cost forecasting, and project controls experience, including BOM-level estimate validation
- Extensive experience developing RFQs, writing scopes of work, leading contractor buyout, managing procurement, and identifying long-lead materials and equipment
- Proven ability to drive field execution across contracted and self-performed work, including construction sequencing, installation coordination, issue resolution, quality control, and closeout.
- Demonstrated ability to independently own major projects, make decisions under pressure, influence cross-functional teams, and deliver results within aggressive schedules
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Must be comfortable working in the field and office, actively engaging in construction execution rather than operating exclusively in a management or administrative capacity
