About this role

Description

You'll join a diverse team of data center professionals. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.

As a Data Center Design Manager, you will be a key member of a high-performing global design engineering leadership team, comprising world-class Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, ICT, Fire, Acoustics, Water, and Security Engineers. You will own the design direction, design quality, and design delivery for a portfolio of mission-critical data center projects across the APAC region.

This is a deeply design-centric role. You will set the vision for complex, multi-discipline infrastructure systems driving design from concept through detailed engineering, construction documentation, and commissioning validation. You will define and evolve regional design standards, champion design automation and tooling innovation, and embed continuous improvement into every phase of the design lifecycle. Your decisions will directly shape how AWS builds its next generation of data centers in APAC.

This role demands close collaboration across multiple facets of the AWS design engineering organisation, external engineering consultancies, and regulatory bodies.

Key job responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Leading a multidisciplinary team of engineers through all phases of data center critical infrastructure design from concept through detailed engineering, construction documentation, and commissioning validation.

Owning end-to-end design direction for power, cooling, controls, physical security, and structural systems setting the architectural vision and ensuring designs meet AWS performance, reliability, and cost targets.

Establishing regional design standards, basis-of-design documents, and design quality frameworks that drive consistency and scalability across APAC projects.

Leading design reviews from schematic through 100% construction documentation, ensuring technical rigour, code compliance, and alignment with AWS global design principles.

Driving design innovation, automation, and tooling initiatives that reduce cycle time, minimise rework, and improve documentation quality.

Tracking design-specific KPIs, cycle time, design maturity, RFI rates, and first-pass quality integrating construction and commissioning feedback to close the as-designed to as-built loop.

Driving design risk identification, constructability reviews, and value engineering across the region.

Establishing design budgets, contributing to business cases, and partnering with finance, engineering leads, and internal customers to optimise resources and define deliverables.

Driving permit approvals and interfacing with AHJ, Australian regulators, and government agencies.

A day in the life
As a Design Manager, your day is anchored in design. You might start with a technical design review of a new cooling topology, then shift to a cross-discipline coordination meeting resolving interface clashes between electrical and mechanical systems.

After lunch, you're reviewing design automation outputs, benchmarking design cycle metrics against regional targets, and coaching a design engineer on construction documentation standards. Later, you brief leadership on design program status, or drive a constructability risk workshop with external consultants.

Every day, you're shaping how AWS designs and delivers its most critical infrastructure in APAC.
