Role Summary
The Junior QA Engineer provides consistent test execution capacity for the platform, helping the team deliver reliable releases through manual testing, test automation, and clear defect reporting. Working under QA leadership, the role translates functional requirements into test cases, validates fixes, and supports user acceptance testing (UAT), client escalations, and business queries. The successful candidate will learn quickly, contribute reliably, and progressively take on broader QA responsibilities, with the aim of developing toward senior QA scope over the next 12–18 months based on demonstrated capability and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Manual Testing and Release Validation
- Execute manual regression cycles for each release, covering assigned features and critical user journeys.
- Author and maintain test cases against Functional Requirements Document (FRD) acceptance criteria, including positive, negative, and boundary scenarios.\
- Perform functional, smoke, and exploratory testing to identify defects and unexpected behaviour.
- Prepare test data, record results and evidence, and communicate testing progress, blockers, and unresolved risks to QA leadership.
Test Automation
- Build, maintain, and improve automated tests under QA leadership, following agreed tools, coding standards, and review practices.
- Help identify repeatable test scenarios suitable for automation and contribute to increasing coverage of critical workflows.
- Run automated tests, investigate failures, and help distinguish product defects from test script, test data, or environment issues.
Defect Management and UAT Support
- Reproduce, isolate, and document bugs with clear steps, environment details, expected and actual results, and supporting evidence.
- Collaborate with developers to clarify issues, retest fixes, and check for related regressions.
- Support UAT defect triage and client escalations by reproducing reported issues, collecting relevant information, and tracking follow-up actions.
- Escalate critical defects and testing blockers promptly, and maintain accurate defect status records.
Business Collaboration and Operational Support
- Engage business and client teams to clarify requirements, understand reported issues, and support delivery.
- Provide day-to-day operational and business query support, documenting requests and resolving or escalating them appropriately.
- Share recurring issues, maintain useful testing and support documentation, and apply feedback to improve testing practices.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Essential
- 1-2 years experience in software testing through employment, internships, attachments, coursework, or practical projects; suitable for candidates at the start of their QA career.
- Understanding of software testing principles, the software development lifecycle, regression testing, test cases, and defect management.
- Ability to interpret functional requirements and acceptance criteria and turn them into structured test scenarios.
- Practical ability to execute manual tests, compare expected and actual results, and document findings accurately.
- Basic familiarity with test automation concepts and either a scripting language or a low-code testing tool, with willingness to develop these skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a methodical approach to investigating issues.
- Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain defects and respond professionally to business and client queries.
- Good organisation and follow-through, with the ability to manage assigned work, meet release timelines, and flag blockers early.
- Ability to work collaboratively, accept feedback, learn new tools quickly, and take ownership of assigned tasks.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- A diploma or degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related discipline, or relevant QA training or certification such as ISTQB Foundation Level.
- Hands-on exposure to automation tools such as Testsigma, Playwright, Selenium, or Cypress.
- Basic programming or scripting skills in a language such as JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, or Java.
- Familiarity with API testing tools such as Postman and basic SQL for validating data.
- Exposure to defect tracking and test management tools, version control such as Git, and automated test execution in CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience working in an Agile team or supporting UAT, releases, technical support, or client issue resolution.
- Exposure to banking, fintech, payments, lending, or other transaction-based platforms.
Success and Development Expectations
- Assigned regression tests are completed on time, with clear results, evidence, and early communication of blockers.
- Test cases remain aligned with requirements, and defects are reproducible, well documented, and followed through to resolution.
- Automation contributions increase progressively, with reliable tests and prompt investigation of failures.
- Business and client queries receive timely follow-up, with accurate escalation and status updates.
- Over 12–18 months, develop greater independence in feature testing, automation maintenance, test coverage assessment, and risk communication, with guidance and review from QA leadership.
