About this role
Data & Insights Developer
Hybrid – Attached to our Solihull, London or Hook office
Full Time, Permanent
Band 3 / £60,000-£65,000 (dependent on experience)
Here at Serco, we’re looking for a Data & Insights Developer to join our Growth UK&E Data & Insight team.
This is not a behind-the-scenes development role. You’ll work directly with stakeholders across Growth to understand their challenges, ask the right questions and build data solutions that are practical, user-friendly and genuinely improve the way people work.
You’ll take ownership of solutions from the initial conversation through to design, development, testing and implementation. This means speaking with users, gathering feedback, challenging assumptions and making sure that each solution is appropriate for the people who will rely on it.
We’re looking for someone who brings curiosity, personality and strong people skills alongside technical credibility. You’ll care about the impact of your work, not simply whether the technology functions, and you’ll be motivated by seeing people adopt and benefit from the solutions you create.
Reporting to the Head of Data & Insight, you’ll work across Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse and the wider data platform to improve reporting, automate processes and help colleagues make better-informed decisions.
As part of this you’ll:
- Build stakeholder-friendly reporting, applications and automated solutions that make complex information easier to understand and use.
- Work closely with stakeholders to explore business challenges and turn unclear or evolving needs into practical technical solutions.
- Lead discovery conversations, requirements workshops, solution demonstrations and user-testing sessions.
- Take end-to-end ownership of solutions, from initial discovery and technical design through to development, testing, deployment and ongoing improvement.
- Gather feedback from users and ensure solutions are appropriate, accessible and aligned with the way people actually work.
- Use Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse, SQL and related technologies to create secure, scalable and maintainable solutions.
- Integrate information from multiple systems, helping to improve data quality, reliability and consistency.
- Explain technical choices, risks and trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
- Challenge requirements constructively when a proposed approach could introduce unnecessary complexity or fail to meet the underlying business need.
- Work with a high degree of autonomy, managing priorities and making sound technical decisions within Serco’s architecture, governance and security frameworks.
What you’ll need to do the role:
- Strong experience developing solutions using Power BI, including DAX, Power Query, data modelling and performance optimisation.
- Experience designing and developing Power Apps, particularly canvas applications.
- Practical experience using Power Automate, Dataverse and SharePoint integrations.
- Strong SQL skills and experience transforming data using Databricks or another cloud data platform.
- Experience bringing together data from multiple systems and resolving complex data-quality problems.
- A working understanding of APIs, system integration, role-based security and information governance.
- Experience using Git or other version-control tools, alongside structured testing and controlled release processes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the confidence to engage, influence and build trust with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- The curiosity to explore what is really driving a business problem rather than simply accepting the initial request at face value.
- The ability to translate ambiguous requirements into clear, proportionate and user-friendly solutions.
- A collaborative and consultative approach, with the confidence to challenge assumptions and explain alternative options.
- A genuine interest in the impact of your work, including how solutions are understood, adopted and used by stakeholders.
- The autonomy and judgement to manage solutions throughout their lifecycle, while balancing changing priorities and business needs.
Experience within a Growth, sales, bidding or pipeline-management environment would be useful, but it is not essential. We’re more interested in your ability to understand new business areas, build trusted relationships and use technology to solve meaningful problems.
