Position Summary
Hendrick Screen Company is seeking a Drafter to support the design and manufacture of custom industrial screening products. This position is responsible for creating accurate customer approval drawings, fabrication drawings, part details, assemblies, and related documentation used by Engineering, Sales, Purchasing, and Manufacturing.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working in an engineered-to-order manufacturing environment, where designs may vary significantly from one project to the next. This role requires strong AutoCAD and 3D Modeling skills, mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and an understanding of how drawings translate into fabricated components on the shop floor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and revise 2D drawings and 3D models for custom screen products, assemblies, and fabricated components.
- Develop customer approval and submittal drawings showing dimensions, configurations, connections, materials, and other project-specific requirements.
- Produce detailed shop and fabrication drawings that clearly communicate how components are to be cut, formed, welded, machined, and assembled.
- Create drawings for individual parts and subassemblies, including appropriate dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, weld information, and fabrication notes.
- Ensure drawings provide Manufacturing with sufficient information to consistently reproduce the intended design without relying on undocumented calculations or assumptions.
- Work closely with Engineering to convert design concepts into manufacturable drawings.
- Assist Sales and Engineering with drawing revisions resulting from customer comments or changes in project requirements.
- Maintain accurate drawing revisions and ensure released drawings reflect the current approved design.
- Check drawings for dimensional accuracy, manufacturability, completeness, and consistency before release.
- Support Manufacturing by answering drawing-related questions and resolving discrepancies found during fabrication.
- Work with Purchasing and Manufacturing to ensure material sizes and component requirements shown on drawings and BOMs are practical and clearly defined.
- Incorporate standard designs and proven manufacturing practices wherever possible while properly documenting project-specific variations.
- Maintain organized electronic drawing and project records.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts related to drawing standards, engineering documentation, and manufacturing workflows.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Technical training in Drafting, CAD, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, particularly 2D mechanical drafting and 3D modeling.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, customer requirements, and fabrication documentation.
- Strong mathematical skills, including fractions, decimals, geometry, and basic trigonometry.
- Ability to visualize components and assemblies from two-dimensional drawings.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with Engineering, Sales, Purchasing, Quality, and Manufacturing personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or technical certificate in Drafting, 2D CAD/3D Modeling, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Manufacturing Technology.
- 2+ years of mechanical drafting experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- Experience with 3D CAD Modeling in CREO(Pro/E) software is a plus.
- Experience working directly with welders, fabricators, machinists, and production personnel is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The ideal candidate will:
- Think like a fabricator as well as a drafter, understanding that a technically correct drawing must also clearly communicate how the product is built.
- Be able to identify missing dimensions or manufacturing information before drawings reach the shop.
- Understand the relationship between raw-material selection, cut lengths, component drawings, and final assemblies.
- Be comfortable working with products that are custom-engineered rather than repetitive production parts.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills when working from incomplete or unusual customer requirements.
- Maintain accuracy while working under project and production deadlines.
- Seek clarification rather than make undocumented assumptions when requirements are unclear.
- Take ownership of drawing quality and documentation.
Working Relationships
The Drafter will work closely with:
Engineering: Product configuration, calculations, technical requirements, drawing review, and problem solving.
Sales/Customer Service: Customer requirements, approval drawings, and drawing revisions.
Manufacturing: Fabrication requirements, drawing interpretation, manufacturability, and shop-floor questions.
Purchasing: Material descriptions, sizes, quantities, and BOM accuracy.
Quality: Drawing requirements, inspection dimensions, specifications, and revision control.
