About this role

We at Yara are part of a global network, collaborating to profitably and responsibly solve some of the world's key challenges - resource scarcity, food insecurity and environmental change.

About the Unit

Digital Production builds the platform and products that connect Yara’s production plants around the globe. Our Digital Production Platform ingests industrial data from sensors, control systems and lab systems at the sites, contextualizes it into a shared information model, and serves it through APIs to the applications our operators, engineers and global functions use every day to run plants more efficiently and safely.

We own the whole lifecycle: we set the vision, design, build, deploy, operate and support the platform and the products on top of it

Responsibilities

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who enjoys building reliable, scalable distributed systems for industrial IoT. You will design and build services that run from the plant edge to the cloud: collecting OPC UA data at the site, streaming it into AWS, contextualizing raw operational data by linking sensor tags to assets, equipment hierarchies, P&IDs and lab results in a shared information model, and exposing this contextualized data through well-designed APIs. You will be a technical anchor in a cross-functional, autonomous team that builds, experiments, iterates and delivers on new objectives. You will shape architecture, raise the engineering bar, coach other engineers and own what the team runs in production. Above all, your work will impact how we feed the world and protect the planet.

What You Will Be Doing

- Build and own services. Design, build and operate cloud-native services in Kotlin/Quarkus and Python on AWS, with a strong focus on reliability, availability, scalability and cost.

- Shape the architecture. Drive the design of event-driven, loosely coupled systems that ingest and contextualize high-volume industrial data, linking time series to assets, equipment hierarchies, P&IDs and lab data.

- Connect the plants. Work on the edge-to-cloud path: OPC UA connectivity, AWS IoT Greengrass and SiteWise, data-quality and ingestion health monitoring.

- Run what you build. Take operational responsibility with your team: on-call, observability, alarms, incident analysis and continuous improvement of what we run.

- Raise the bar. Champion DevSecOps: infrastructure as code, automated pipelines, test automation and secure-by-default services

- Lead and mentor. Lead technical discussions, review designs and code, and coach and give feedback to other engineers. Share knowledge and collaborate with some of Yara’s best software engineers.

- Collaborate across disciplines. Work with product managers, data scientists and plant stakeholders to turn operational problems into products, including our AI-powered operations copilot.

Profile

What You Will Bring

- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Information Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Science or a similar field.

- 10+ years of software engineering experience in development, architecture and design of distributed systems, including building and operating systems on AWS.

- Strong skills in at least one JVM language (Kotlin preferred, or Java) and working knowledge of Python; willingness to work across both.

- Experience building loosely coupled, large-scale distributed systems using a microservice architecture style, with REST APIs and a modern framework such as Quarkus, Spring Boot, Micronaut or Ktor.

- Hands-on experience with core AWS services such as Lambda, ECS/Fargate, API Gateway, DynamoDB and RDS.

- Experience with messaging and event-driven architecture: AWS SNS, SQS and EventBridge.

- Solid experience with test automation, debugging and other automation techniques: unit, integration and contract tests, CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure as code (CloudFormation, CDK or Terraform).

- Ownership of production systems: monitoring, alerting, debugging and incident handling.

- Experience with frontend technologies and frameworks such as React, Angular or Vue.js, plus HTML and CSS.

- Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical decisions within a team.

- Fluent English. You are eager to learn, a conscientious worker, and a thoughtful, kind and supportive person who enjoys sharing knowledge and values team success over personal achievements.

Additional Information

Nice to Have

- Industrial IoT or OT experience: OPC UA, historians, SCADA/DCS, or AWS IoT SiteWise and Greengrass.

- Time-series data modelling and processing at scale.

- Industrial data contextualization and information modelling: asset models, ISA-95, DEXPI/P&ID or knowledge graphs such as Neo4j.

- Edge computing and device or certificate lifecycle management.

- Building with LLMs: Amazon Bedrock and agent frameworks.

- Experience in manufacturing, process industry, chemicals or energy.

Why Us?

- Real autonomy. Your team sets its own objectives aligned with the mission and business strategy, shapes its roadmap and delivers value step by step.

- Tangible impact. The platform runs in real plants. Your code helps operators work more safely and efficiently.

- Hard, interesting problems. Edge-to-cloud industrial data, event-driven systems and applied AI at global scale.

- Global, hybrid team. A globally dispersed, diverse team with a hybrid model. We value face-to-face collaboration in our Oslo office and focus on hiring the best talent.

- Growth. Support for personal development, with internal knowledge sharing and training.
