POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Suva, Fiji

The global fisheries sector remains one of the most analog and opaque industries, creating conditions for illegal fishing, fraud, and human rights abuses. Crew on distant water industrial fishing vessels are especially vulnerable to exploitation, often lacking connectivity to report grievances, access support, or contact friends and family. Emerging technologies, including satellite Wi-Fi systems, offer promising solutions to improve oversight, transparency, and crew well-being, while also advancing ocean conservation. Since 2022, Conservation International (CI) has led pilot projects to test the application and implementation of these technologies in the fishing sector and are now focused on scaling this initiative to critical fishing ports across the Pacific.

As part of the CI Fiji team and working in close coordination with the global Center for Oceans, the Coordinator will play an instrumental role in bringing Wi-Fi connectivity for crew at sea on industrial fishing vessels in Fiji. Specifically, the Coordinator will primarily support the implementation of Accountability at Sea, a project to improve crew welfare and working conditions through secure and reliable Wi-Fi connectivity on industrial fishing vessels, as well as general support for the related jurisdictional initiative for Pacific Tuna in Fiji. The Coordinator will support engagement with the Fiji Fishing Industry Association (FFIA) through their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CI Fiji, worker organisations, government agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), research institutions, and other key stakeholders to strengthen social responsibility, human rights due diligence, responsible labour practices, and sustainable fisheries management across the oceanic fisheries sector in Fiji. The position will support delivery of project workplans, specifically, supporting delivery of crew and captain training on labour rights and Wi-Fi technology, installation and setup of connectivity technologies onboard vessels, in addition to other general stakeholder engagement activities, communications, monitoring, policy reviews, and partnership commitments, including implementation of agreements with the FFIA and other key partners.
