About this role

As an Operations Research/Data Scientist on the Assignments team, you will help build, maintain, and scale the algorithms/models that power our global delivery network.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of mathematical optimization, machine learning, and software engineering. You will collaborate closely with senior scientists and software engineers to translate business rules into robust mathematical formulations, build predictive models that inform dynamic parameters, and ship production-ready Python services. You will take ownership of discrete algorithmic components, run historical simulations, and help monitor live system performance to ensure our assignment engine remains fast, reliable, and cost-effective.

These are some of the key components to the position:

- Solid working knowledge of combinatorial optimization concepts, particularly Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) formulations, Vehicle Routing Problems (VRP), and heuristic search methods.
- Practical experience applying statistical methods and machine learning algorithms (e.g., supervised learning, unsupervised learning) to generate inputs, estimate operational states, or refine optimization parameters.
- Strong proficiency in Python with a solid grasp of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), design patterns, type hinting, and writing clean, testable, and modular code. Knowledge of Java is a plus.
- Hands-on experience with Python optimization modeling libraries or solver APIs (e.g., Pyomo, PuLP, OR-Tools) and familiarity with commercial or open-source solvers (e.g., Gurobi, SCIP, HiGHS).
- Practical experience deploying models or algorithmic services to production, with an understanding of runtime constraints, latency, and setting up basic telemetry to monitor solution quality and performance.
- Hands-on experience querying relational databases and data warehouses with SQL to pull, clean, and validate data for model training, benchmarking, and offline simulation.
- Good working knowledge of standard development practices, including version control with Git, automated testing (unit/integration tests), Docker containerization, and participating in code reviews.
- Experience in the logistics and last-mile delivery domain is highly beneficial.

What will you bring to the team?

- A curious, analytical approach to solving operational problems under real-world constraints (e.g., delivery windows, driver availability, travel times).
- Growth mindset with an eagerness to learn production OR & DS techniques, system architecture, and trade-offs from experienced peers.
- Ability to test hypotheses rigorously using historical trace data, evaluating results through clear metric tracking.
- Collaborative communication style, comfortable explaining model logic, edge cases, and trade-offs to engineers, data scientists, and product managers.
- Pragmatic mindset focused on shipping clean, working solutions rather than over-engineering.
