Job Description

AltaGas - Lead Operations Engineer, NEBC

#

AltaGas is seeking a Lead Operations Engineer - NEBC to provide engineering leadership across an assigned portfolio of operating assets. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Operations Engineering, the Lead Engineer, Operations owns engineering performance across an assigned portfolio of assets and serves as the first formal management layer within the Operations Engineering model.

The role leads and develops Operations Engineering staff, aligns technical priorities, risk, investment, and resources across the portfolio, and ensures asset teams receive a coherent and effective engineering response.

The Lead Engineer retains sufficient technical depth to challenge, coach, and assure work, but success is primarily achieved through people, prioritization, delegation, reporting, budgeting, and cross-functional alignment rather than personally executing every technical issue.

This is a full-time position based out of our Calgary, Alberta office. Regular travel to operating sites is expected to maintain field engagement, support asset health activities, and build strong relationships with site leadership teams.

You Will:

- Lead engineering performance across assigned assets, maintaining visibility of asset health, material technical issues, recurring failures, and operational risks. Ensure clear technical ownership is in place and that significant issues receive the right level of engineering response, specialist support, and leadership attention.
- Lead the development and prioritization of multi-year maintenance capital, reliability, risk-reduction, and optimization needs. Assess problem statements, options, scope, value, timing, and investment priorities to provide clear recommendations that support asset performance and business needs.
- Lead and develop Operations Engineering staff by setting clear expectations, delegating outcomes, providing ongoing feedback and coaching, and managing commitments. Identify capability, staffing, coverage, and succession needs while building technical judgement and ownership within the team.
- Manage engineering budgets, forecasts, resources, and priorities across the portfolio. Balance capacity across assets, monitor budget performance, and recommend appropriate trade-offs when competing priorities or demand exceed available resources.
- Provide clear reporting on portfolio health, material risks, delivery, investment needs, resource constraints, and key decisions required. Lead portfolio reviews to prioritize work, resolve conflicts, remove barriers, and maintain accountability for deliverables.
- Build strong relationships across Operations, Projects, Engineering, Integrity, Maintenance, EHS, Process Safety, Commercial, and other key functions to align technical priorities and ensure a coordinated engineering approach across the portfolio.
- Maintain high standards for technical rigour, documentation, checking, peer review, assurance, and accountability. Determine when additional specialist support, independent review, or leadership escalation is required and address recurring technical or governance gaps.

You Have:

- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Other disciplines will be considered with applicable experience, notably Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering.
- 12+ years of oil and gas industry experience, including substantial experience supporting operating assets.
- Previous technical leadership, team-lead, supervisory, or people-management experience is considered an asset.
- Experience with capital planning, portfolio prioritization, budgeting, resource planning, or management reporting is considered an asset.
- Professional designation P.Eng., P.L. (Eng.), or P.Tech. (Eng.) registered with APEGA.
- A practical and credible leadership style, with the ability to navigate technical, operational, business, and people discussions.
- Strong communication and judgement, with the ability to challenge assumptions, build constructive relationships, and provide clear, decision-ready recommendations.
- Effective people leadership skills, including setting expectations, delegating, coaching, and holding people accountable.
- The ability to balance competing priorities, make sound trade-offs, and stay focused on material risk and business value in a dynamic operating environment.
- Ability to travel to AltaGas operational sites or corporate offices as required.

Why AltaGas?
