Locations: Toronto or Montreal

The Opportunity

Barings’ Global Business Development Group is seeking an accomplished institutional sales professional to expand the firm’s presence and client relationships across Canada. The role will focus primarily on the middle-market institutional segment and the investment consultant channel, working in close partnership with Barings’ North American institutional sales team.

This individual will be responsible for developing new relationships, originating opportunities and growing Barings’ Canadian institutional client base. The successful candidate will bring deep knowledge of the Canadian market, a strong network of investor and consultant relationships and a demonstrated record of winning new business.

This person must be entrepreneurial, highly self-directed and accountable, while remaining closely connected to colleagues across the firm. The position may be based in Toronto or Montreal and will require regular travel throughout Canada.

Primary Responsibilities

- Develop and execute a comprehensive institutional sales strategy for Canada, with particular focus on middle-market institutional investors and investment consultants.
- Originate, develop and convert new business opportunities across Barings’ public and private market investment capabilities.
- Leverage and expand an established network of Canadian institutional investors, consultants and other key market participants.
- Build trusted relationships with corporate and public pension plans, insurance companies, endowments, foundations and other institutional allocators.
- Develop and deepen relationships across the Canadian investment consultant community, including a strong understanding of consultant research, ratings and manager-selection processes.
- Maintain detailed knowledge of prospective and existing clients, including key decision makers, investment objectives, asset-allocation priorities, portfolio needs and consultant relationships.
- Partner closely with Barings’ investment, product, client portfolio management and broader business development teams to deliver a coordinated and thoughtful client experience.
- Monitor Canadian institutional investment trends, competitive dynamics and evolving client needs, and communicate actionable market intelligence internally.
- Represent Barings at client meetings, industry conferences and other relevant events throughout Canada.
- Operate effectively and independently in a remote environment, demonstrating sound judgment, consistent follow-through and a high level of accountability.

Qualifications

- 10+ years of institutional asset management sales or business development experience, with meaningful experience covering Canadian institutional investors and/or investment consultants.
- Strong existing network of institutional investor and consultant relationships across Canada.
- Proven track record of originating and winning institutional mandates and delivering against business development goals.
- Strong understanding of the Canadian institutional marketplace, including investor priorities, consultant dynamics and institutional manager-selection processes.
- Experience representing investment strategies across public and/or private markets. Experience with fixed income, private credit, real estate, infrastructure or other alternative investment strategies is particularly relevant.
- Entrepreneurial, proactive and highly self-motivated, with a demonstrated ability to build new relationships and develop business with limited day-to-day oversight.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely and transparently with colleagues across a global organization.
- Strong executive presence and excellent presentation, interpersonal and written communication skills.
- High degree of integrity, judgment and accountability, with the ability to develop trusted, long-term relationships internally and externally.
- Willingness to travel regularly throughout Canada and periodically to other Barings offices.
- Fluency in English is required; fluency in French is strongly preferred to support coverage of Québec-based institutions.
- Appropriate Canadian securities registrations, or the ability to obtain any registrations required for the role within the applicable timeframe.
