About this role
Tesla is seeking a Calibration Engineer to develop, optimize, and maintain calibration processes for inspection, measurement, and test equipment (IM&TE) supporting our battery cell manufacturing operations. This role is critical in ensuring measurement accuracy, compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards, and alignment with industry best practices.
The Calibration Engineer will work closely with the Calibration Supervisor and lab technicians to define calibration requirements, develop procedures, and implement measurement process improvements. This fast-paced, high-volume environment requires a detail-oriented and analytical professional committed to enhancing metrology capabilities and maintaining the highest quality standards.
- Calibration requirement analysis: Evaluate IM&TE, define the functions to verify, and establish appropriate calibration methods
- Procedure development: Develop, validate, and implement calibration procedures to metrology standards, including recommended standards, equipment, and methods
- Interval analysis: Use engineering and statistical review of equipment performance and historical data to set optimal calibration intervals for reliability and traceability
- Quality and compliance: Support the lab QMS, maintain ISO/IEC 17025 compliance, document procedures, and help train staff on quality standards
- Collaboration and support: Partner with the Calibration Supervisor and internal teams, and communicate calibration results and compliance needs
- Uncertainty and improvement: Document measurement uncertainty and drive process improvement through statistics, proficiency testing, and root cause analysis
- Systems, data, and training: Define calibration data protocols, manage LIMS and automated calibration systems, and mentor technicians on metrology principles and documented best practices
- Degree in Engineering, Metrology, or equivalent experience
- 2+ years of experience in a calibration or metrology engineering role
- Proven experience in calibration engineering and measurement science
- Strong knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025, ANSI/NCSL Z540, and NIST standards
- Experience in measurement uncertainty analysis and calibration interval optimization
- Ability to analyze complex technical data and implement process improvements
- Strong documentation, organization, and communication skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and LIMS software
- Hands-on experience with calibration across multiple disciplines including dimensional, electrical, pressure, mass/weight/force, temperature/humidity, analytical chemical, vision, radiation, and gas
- Experience working in a high-volume manufacturing environment with knowledge of automation systems and data analysis tools
- Demonstrated expertise in continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma preferred)
