About this role

The Jim and Eleanor Randall Department of Surgery and Department of Computational Biomedicine is seeking a faculty biostatistician to join Cedars-Sinai.

The Faculty Biostatistician provides comprehensive statistical consultation and collaboration for clinical and basic science research initiatives at Cedars-Sinai. Working with leadership and investigators in the Jim and Eleanor Randall Department of Surgery, this faculty member will contribute to study design, quantitative methods, data analysis, interpretation, and the development of high-impact research.

The Faculty Biostatistician will also develop an independent research program using applied and quantitative methodological research, contribute to peer-reviewed funding efforts, and teach or mentor clinical scientists, basic scientists, trainees, and junior biostatisticians through institutional educational programs.

Cedars-Sinai’s Department of Computational Biomedicine is a relatively young, rapidly expanding department that serves as an institution-wide hub connecting computational scientists with clinicians, biomedical researchers, and health-system data resources. Its central purpose is to use computation, artificial intelligence, statistics, and biomedical data to accelerate discoveries that can improve diagnosis, prevention, treatment, and patient outcomes.

The department was established as AI and computational science were becoming central drivers of biomedical research. In its first five years, it grew to approximately 20 primary faculty members, including 14 recruited faculty, and developed collaborations across Cedars-Sinai’s clinical and research programs.

Faculty research spans a broad range of computational and translational disciplines, including:

- Artificial intelligence and machine learning for healthcare
- Biomedical informatics and clinical data science
- Computational genomics and human genetics
- Multi-omics data integration
- Electronic health record analysis and clinical prediction
- Natural language processing and knowledge discovery
- Digital pathology and medical imaging
- Biostatistics and statistical modeling
- Precision medicine and disease-risk prediction

Examples of current research include integrating genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, imaging, and clinical data; developing genetic risk-prediction methods; identifying disease biomarkers; and using machine learning to improve diagnosis and treatment planning.

Cedars-Sinai is a premier academic nonprofit health system in the heart of the vibrantly diverse city of Los Angeles, with a rapidly expanding global presence.

Cedars-Sinai physicians and scientists are leaders in basic and clinical research, bringing advancements in medicine directly from the laboratory to the bedside. Opportunities for surgeons to collaborate with productive full-time researchers present a unique opportunity for the academically motivated surgeon. We are committed to expanding and strengthening our regional, national, and international reputation for delivering high value services at all sites of care. This mission has been furthered by the establishment of Cedars-Sinai Health System (CSHS), an expansive regional healthcare system. The system includes three of the finest hospitals in Southern California beyond the flagship Cedars-Sinai Medical Center totaling more than 2,300 beds with revenues exceeding $7 billion annually.

At Cedars-Sinai, we are caretakers and innovators committed to the pursuit of equitable healthcare. But health equity is not possible without representation. Our commitment to diversity goes beyond demographics or checking boxes. Our people must reflect the diverse identities, experiences and geographies of the communities and patients we serve – because that’s what our patients, colleagues and communities deserve.

- Doctoral degree (MD, PhD, DVM) in bioinformatics, data sciences, computer science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated excellence in biostatistical methods and research with high scientific impact.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications.
- Active record of peer-reviewed funding.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and mentoring skills.
- Collaborative style that fosters teamwork and innovation.
