About this role
We seek a highly motivated and hands-on engineer with an electrical and controls engineering background for a position in the Manufacturing Test Engineering group, a team focused on building robust, beautiful, data-centric automated testing equipment for Tesla’s power electronics and battery manufacturing lines. This team concentrates on mechanical, electrical, software, and controls of capital equipment for our production lines around the world. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the “machine that builds the machine,” working tightly with power electronics product design and manufacturing. The ideal candidate takes pride in their hands-on work, analytical ability, communication skills and attention to detail. They are equally comfortable designing electrical schematics and developing PLC/HMI control programs for automated test systems. They look forward to learning an incredible amount on the job and carrying responsibility within the team.
- Research and specify electrical test equipment such as measurement equipment, power supplies, sensors, I/O devices, and other hardware to meet test requirements
- Develop PLC and HMI programs for automated tester control, primarily using Siemens TIA Portal and WinCC, with occasional use of Allen Bradley and PILZ controllers
- Domestic and international travel up to 20%
- Architect and implement communication interfaces between PLCs, test PCs, supervisory control systems, and databases to enable seamless data acquisition and tester coordination
- Assist in designing schematics and layouts for industrial electrical control panels which are NFPA79/NEC/UL508A compliant
- Implement reliable industrial safety systems (OSHA compliant) to the ISO 13849-1 functional safety standard, safeguarding high voltage and mechanical hazards
- Debug/optimize automated processes to minimize cycle time and maximize uptime, including characterization of equipment using statistical approaches (e.g., GR&R, Cpk)
- 5+ years of hands-on controls/mechatronics/test/automation engineering experience
- Experience developing PLC programs and HMI applications, preferably in Siemens TIA Portal and WinCC; familiarity with Allen Bradley or PILZ platforms is a plus
- Exposure to electrical test and automation equipment including but not limited to power supplies, multimeters, oscilloscopes, variable frequency drives, and pneumatic actuators
- Proficiency reading and building schematics for machines and/or PCBAs, preferably in electrical CAD software such as EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical
- Understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g., PROFINET, Ethernet/IP, OPC UA, TCP/IP) and experience interfacing controllers with PCs, databases, or supervisory systems
- Exposure to functional safety design per ISO 13849-1 or similar safety standards (e.g. IEC 61508, IEC 61511)
- Degree in Electrical, Computer, or Mechatronic Engineering, or equivalent experience
