About this role

Careers that change lives start here. Medtronic is a global leader in healthcare technology with a Mission to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. Our 95,000 employees work across more than 150 countries to put patients first — developing innovative medical technologies that improve the lives of 72+ million patients each year. Your unique talents will help shape the future of healthcare while building a career grounded in purpose, growth, and impact.

# A Day in the Life
Making the best possible surgery accessible to every patient. We believe the future of surgery is less invasive and more precise, predictable, and personalised.

We bring together sharp surgical expertise, extensive medical knowledge, and cutting-edge technology with a single-minded focus on each patient - wherever they are, and however they need to be treated.

Each surgical specialty faces unique challenges, yet the goal is universal: better care for patients. By understanding these differences, we deliver solutions that empower surgeons and keep patients at the heart of every decision.

We are seeking a Senior Principal Electrical / Mechatronics Engineer – Robotics Capital & Test Systems to provide technical leadership for the architecture, design and development of the electromechanical systems that power, sense and control advanced capital equipment and test platforms for medical devices and robotic systems. The role owns the intersection of mechanics, motors, encoders, sensors, drives, electronics, power distribution and machine controls, translating system and test needs into safe, accurate and maintainable equipment solutions.

This is a senior individual-contributor role with significant influence across multidisciplinary teams. The successful candidate will define electrical and mechatronic architecture, lead critical design decisions and establish reusable hardware platforms that deliver deterministic motion, high-integrity sensing, reliable data acquisition and traceable control of test conditions. The role combines deep technical expertise with hands-on engineering from concept and prototyping through commissioning, verification, release and lifecycle support.

The role will be based at the Mervue Campus in Galway, Ireland.

- Lead the electrical and mechatronic architecture, design and development of capital equipment and test systems used for instrument performance testing, characterisation, identification, verification and engineering investigations.
- Own system-level integration across motors, encoders, sensors, servo drives, power electronics, safety circuits, electrical cabinets, data-acquisition hardware, programmable controllers and mechanical interfaces.
- Translate test objectives, product requirements, motion profiles, load cases and measurement needs into robust electrical, controls and mechatronic architectures and detailed equipment specifications.
- Develop and review electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cabinet layouts, cable and harness designs, interface-control documents, bills of materials and design documentation using appropriate electrical-design tools.
- Select and size motors, servo and stepper drives, encoders, load cells, torque sensors, displacement sensors, signal-conditioning hardware, power supplies, protection devices and industrial communication interfaces.
- Define motion-control and sensing concepts that provide controlled, repeatable and traceable force, torque, displacement, velocity, position and other relevant test inputs and outputs.
- Lead concept generation, feasibility, prototyping, detailed design, design reviews, build, integration, commissioning, verification, troubleshooting and release of test equipment.
- Partner with mechanical engineers to optimise motor and transmission selection, packaging, cable routing, thermal performance, grounding, shielding, service access and overall mechatronic performance.
- Collaborate with controls and software engineers to define real-time interfaces, I/O architecture, communications, machine states, interlocks, diagnostics and automated test-system behaviour.
- Apply engineering analysis and simulation to assess power budgets, motor and drive performance, electrical loads, signal integrity, noise susceptibility, thermal behaviour and component derating.
- Embed electrical and machine safety through risk assessment, protective measures, emergency-stop architecture, safe-torque-off concepts, isolation, guarding interfaces and verification of safety functions.
- Lead technical problem solving and root-cause investigations for complex interactions between instruments, robotic systems, motion hardware, sensors, electronics and test infrastructure.

Key Skills & Experience

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering or a related engineering discipline with 10+ years of relevant experience, OR a Master’s/advanced degree with 8+ years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated senior-level experience in electrical and mechatronic system design for capital equipment, automation equipment, robotics, test systems or special-purpose machinery.
- Strong capability in integrated design across motors, encoders, sensors, servo drives, power distribution, safety circuits, electrical cabinets and mechanical interfaces.
- Proven experience creating and reviewing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, cabinet layouts, cable and harness documentation, bills of materials and interface-control documentation.
- Strong understanding of servo and stepper motion systems, motor and drive sizing, feedback devices, closed-loop behaviour, power electronics and electromechanical system dynamics.
- Experience selecting and integrating measurement sensors and data-acquisition hardware, including signal conditioning, analogue and digital I/O, grounding, shielding, noise mitigation and calibration considerations.
- Experience integrating electrical hardware with mechanical systems, embedded or industrial controls, PLCs, real-time systems, software and systems-engineering interfaces.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical decisions, conduct design reviews, manage technical risk and solve multidisciplinary equipment and test-system problems.
- Strong communication, collaboration, technical leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to influence across functions without direct authority.
- Experience with electrical safety, machinery risk assessment, emergency-stop and interlock design, safe motion concepts, equipment commissioning and preventive-maintenance considerations is desirable.
- Experience in medical devices, robotics, regulated product development or high-reliability test environments is advantageous.
