Help People. Grow a Team. Build Better Software.

Do you enjoy using technology to make a difference in people’s lives? Are you a hands-on technical leader who enjoys developing others and continuing to learn? At Health Advocate, you can help build software that makes it easier for people to navigate healthcare and access the support they need.

We’re looking for a Software QA Manager who can balance business priorities with technical improvements and innovation. You’ll lead our company-wide QA team, including offshore employees, and shape how we test and improve our applications and services. You’ll bring the judgment to decide where automation adds value, where deeper investigation is needed, and how to make the best use of the team’s time.

This role combines people leadership with hands-on engineering. You should be comfortable discussing product risks with business leaders, coaching a QA engineer, reviewing automation code, and investigating an issue across the full application stack.

Experienced SDETs and QA technical leads with demonstrated experience leading technical staff are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and Develop the QA Team

·         Manage all QA employees, including offshore resources, with clear expectations, work assignments, feedback, and accountability.

·         Assess individual and team capabilities, identify skill gaps, and establish training and development plans.

·         Mentor staff in testing techniques, automation, troubleshooting, and effective collaboration.

·         Conduct performance reviews and support hiring, onboarding, and career development.

·         Coordinate work across locations and time zones, establishing effective communication and handoffs.

Set Strategy and Balance Priorities

·         Lead QA planning across Health Advocate’s software portfolio.

·         Evaluate and prioritize requests for QA support based on business value, product risk, delivery commitments, and available capacity.

·         Balance immediate delivery needs with investments in automation, technical improvements, and new testing approaches.

·         Review existing test cases, automated suites, environments, test data, and documentation to identify gaps, duplication, and maintenance needs.

·         Develop a long-term QA improvement plan with clear priorities, resource needs, and measures of progress.

·         Communicate staffing constraints and technical tradeoffs, recommending practical options to leadership.

Guide Full Stack Testing and Automation

·         Create and review test strategies and test plans covering the full application stack, including user interfaces, APIs, services, databases, servers, connectivity, and integrations.

·         Validate complete user workflows, data integrity, and interactions between systems—not just individual components.

·         Design and guide maintainable automation for web, API, Windows desktop, and mobile products, drawing on team expertise where needed.

·         Write, review, debug, and maintain automation code to establish sound practices and support staff development.

·         Guide functional, exploratory, integration, regression, performance, and load testing.

·         Investigate failures across application layers using logs, database queries, service responses, and other diagnostic evidence.

·         Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and improve the reliability and usefulness of test results.

·         Oversee the availability, reliability, and maintenance of test environments, test data, and testing infrastructure, including automation frameworks and test execution systems for cloud-hosted and other applications.

·         Evaluate and apply AI tools to improve testing, automation, analysis, and documentation, reviewing their outputs for accuracy and usefulness.

Partner on Product Quality and Release Readiness

·         Work with product, design, and engineering teams throughout development to clarify expected behavior and identify risks early.

·         Promote shared responsibility for quality, including developer-owned testing and close collaboration with QA.

·         Execute tests and perform exploratory testing to understand products, investigate issues, and guide the team.

·         Ensure test coverage reflects realistic usage, failure conditions, and business-critical workflows.

·         Communicate defects, coverage gaps, dependencies, and release risks clearly.

·         Review regression, performance, and load test results, assess unresolved risks, and provide evidence-based release readiness assessments and actionable recommendations.

Required Qualifications

·         Must reside in the United States.

·         A completed bachelor’s degree or higher.

·         Substantial software QA experience, including hands-on automation design and implementation.

·         Experience managing technical employees or serving as a technical team lead responsible for work assignments, mentoring, and delivery accountability.

·         Experience managing or leading offshore technical resources and coordinating work across time zones.

·         Proficiency in at least one modern programming language, with the ability to write, review, debug, and maintain automation code.

·         Full-stack testing experience spanning user interfaces, APIs, backend services, databases, and system integrations.

·         Ability to investigate issues involving application servers, connectivity, data flow, and dependencies.

·         Experience designing and executing performance and load tests and interpreting the results.

·         Experience testing cloud-hosted applications or services; no specific cloud provider is required.

·         Working knowledge of database querying and data validation.

·         Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, defect management, and software delivery practices.

·         Practical experience using AI tools professionally, including prompting AI assistants to support coding, testing, analysis, or documentation.

·         Ability to assess technical capabilities, prioritize competing needs, and balance business commitments with technical improvements.

·         Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical teams and business leaders.

Preferred Qualifications

·         A degree in a technical or quantitative field, such as Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry.

·         Formal people-management experience, including performance reviews, hiring, and career development.

·         Experience working with Git repositories and version control workflows.

·         Experience testing and automating Windows desktop applications.

·         Mobile application testing and automation experience.

·         Security and privacy testing experience.

·         Familiarity with HIPAA and practices for handling protected health information (PHI).

·         Experience improving QA practices across multiple products or teams.

·         Experience with Selenium, Cucumber or other BDD frameworks, TestNG, Appium, BrowserStack, Postman, or comparable testing tools is preferred.

Initial Priorities

·         Assess QA staff capabilities and identify training and development needs.

·         Evaluate active and incoming requests for QA support and recommend priorities and staffing assignments.

·         Review existing test cases, automation, environments, and other testing assets.

·         Develop a long-term plan that balances near-term delivery needs with improvements in quality, automation, and team effectiveness.
