About this role

Carnegie Mellon University is a private, global research university that stands among the world’s most renowned education institutions. With ground-breaking brain science, path-breaking performances, creative start-ups, big data, big ambitions, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn’t imagine the future, we invent it. If you’re passionate about joining a community that challenges the curious to deliver work that matters, your journey starts here!

Innovation. Interdisciplinary collaboration. Complex problem solving. In Carnegie Mellon University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in advanced manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join their team.  This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment.  You will contribute to the department by assisting with the development of a new generation of multiscale computational models that connect microstructural tissue mechanics, microvascular flow and transport, and tissue function, spanning both in vivo human tissue and in vitro engineered tissue systems along with a highly collaborative computational modeling team. This position offers an unusual opportunity to work as part of a tightly integrated team spanning CMU and other universities.

Your core responsibilities will include:

- Collaborate closely with other team members and with experimental, computational, and clinical investigators to develop models capable of connecting tissue microstructure and local mechanical and transport processes to emergent tissue-level functions.
- Develop fundamentally new computational methods with direct biological and translational impact.
- Other tasks as assigned.

Flexibility, excellence, and passion are vital qualities within Carnegie Mellon University. Inclusion, collaboration and cultural sensitivity are valued competencies at CMU. Therefore, we are in search of a team member who is able to effectively interact with a varied population of internal and external partners at a high level of integrity. We are looking for someone who shares our values and who will support the mission of the university through their work.

You should demonstrate:

- A desire to establish an independent research trajectory at the intersection of computational science, biomechanics, imaging, and cardiovascular medicine while contributing to an ambitious international effort to transform our understanding of coronary microvascular disease.

Qualifications:

- Doctorate degree
- 0-1 year of experience
- Strong backgrounds in computational engineering, applied mathematics, biomechanics, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, or related disciplines.
- An excellent research record and demonstrated ability to conduct independent research.
- Strong scientific communication skills.
- A commitment to collaborative and reproducible science.
- Creativity, ambition and a desire to participate in collaborative research.
- A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Relevant experience includes : finite element or computational mechanics, computational fluid dynamics and transport, multiscale or multiphysics modeling, scientific machine learning, computer vision and biomedical image analysis, parameter estimation, and integration of experimental or clinical imaging data with computational models. Candidates need not have expertise across all these areas; rather, we are seeking individuals with deep expertise in one or more areas and enthusiasm for working across traditional disciplinary boundaries.
