Iron Mountain is seeking an authoritative Principal BMS & Controls Engineer to join our Design & Engineering team.
In this role, you will serve as the regional technical authority shaping the next generation of control systems, instrumentation, and automation architectures across our expanding data centre portfolio. You’ll have the opportunity to set engineering standards and govern complex designs that directly safeguard operational resilience and platform reliability. Here, your senior technical leadership and engineering judgement will turn forward-thinking concepts into scalable, mission-critical infrastructure.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities) In this role, you will:
- Set regional technical direction: Define design principles, basis-of-design requirements, and performance outcomes for BMS, EPMS, plant PLCs, operational technology (OT), and DCIM integrations.
- Govern standards and architecture: Maintain discipline assurance frameworks, approved specifications, and technical standards across new builds, customer expansions, and operational upgrades.
- Resolve systemic technical risk: Act as the final authority on precedent-setting or high-impact engineering decisions, deviations, and root-cause reliability investigations.
- Drive product and vendor strategy: Partner with Supply Chain and strategic equipment manufacturers to establish technical requirements for owner-furnished controls equipment.
- Foster engineering capability: Cultivate a regional community of practice, mentoring senior engineering colleagues and advising executive leadership on long-term technology roadmaps.
What You’ll Bring (Skills & Qualifications) The ideal candidate will have:
- 15+ years of relevant experience, including demonstrated technical leadership across large-scale data centres or complex mission-critical environments.
- Strong knowledge of data centre BMS, EPMS, plant PLC sequencing, OT cybersecurity, and DCIM architectures.
- Proven ability to set regional technical governance, reconcile global requirements with local codes, and resolve ambiguous, high-impact technical challenges.
- Exceptional stakeholder leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams, equipment vendors, and executive leadership without formal authority.
- University degree in Controls, Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems Engineering, or equivalent practical experience (Professional Engineering license or chartership strongly preferred).

- Location: UK | NL | DE | ES - Remote Contract
- Shifts: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
- Competitive compensation and benefits aligned with experience.
- Generous paid time off and holiday allowance.
- Flexible work options/alternative work options to support work–life balance.
- Comprehensive health, wellness, and retirement plans.
- Opportunities for continuous learning and professional growth.
