About this role

** This position is contingent upon contract award.**

Leidos seeks an experienced, hands-on Integration Engineer for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Summit Advanced Tooling, Lakehouse, and Artificial Intelligence Services (ATLAS) program. The role designs, implements, and maintains secure, supportable integrations between the Summit Data Platform, other VA analytics platforms, on-premises systems, cloud services, and external partners.

Remote work within CONUS is permitted subject to VA approval and access requirements. Washington, DC metropolitan-area candidates are preferred. Must accommodate Eastern Time collaboration, program travel, and occasional after-hours/weekend support for critical incidents or planned maintenance .

The engineer applies approved enterprise architecture and interoperability patterns to technical designs, interfaces, and implementation, working with the Cloud Data Architect, IT Solutions Architects, security teams, and delivery teams. This role focuses on hands-on integration delivery and troubleshooting; enterprise interoperability standards and architecture governance remain with the Cloud Data Architect and VA governance authorities.

Primary Responsibilities

- Design, implement, and document integration solutions using approved patterns across Azure, hybrid/on-premises environments, third-party services, and VA platforms, including Summit, Advanced Health Insights, Customer Experience Insights, and legacy data sources.
- Develop interface specifications, API and data-exchange implementations, routing, network boundaries, identity federation, authorization, and trust models; identify technical dependencies and failure modes.
- Apply approved VA Enterprise Cloud, Zero Trust, security, and architecture standards; maintain connection & network diagrams, technical documentation, and implementation records; flag exceptions for architecture governance review.
- Implement governed data interoperability through federated access, metadata/catalog synchronization, lineage, and consistent access policies across platforms; collaborate with data governance and engineering leads.
- Partner with cloud, network, security, DevSecOps, and application teams to implement, test, monitor, and troubleshoot integrations; establish runbooks, observability, and recovery procedures.
- Assess integration implementation alternatives for performance, resilience, cost, maintainability, and operational risk; support architecture reviews and implementation planning.
- Provide technical guidance, peer reviews, and integration troubleshooting across multidisciplinary teams; coordinate with VA stakeholders and external providers.
- Support production incident escalation and service restoration for complex integration failures, including occasional after-hours response when required.

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field with 12+ years of relevant experience; or master's degree with 10+ years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience designing, implementing, and supporting enterprise integration solutions spanning multiple systems and cloud/hybrid environments.
- Strong knowledge of APIs, web services, data exchange, network connectivity, routing, authentication/authorization, and secure inter-system communication.
- Hands-on experience designing, implementing, and troubleshooting cloud-based integrations using at least one major cloud platform (preferred Microsoft Azure), including APIs, networking, identity management, data services, and hybrid connectivity.
- Understanding of enterprise data platforms, metadata, data lineage, access controls, and federated or distributed data-access approaches.
- Ability to produce architecture/interface specifications, network and data-flow diagrams, operational runbooks, and technical decision documentation.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity and operational resilience, including Zero Trust principles, segmentation, encryption, monitoring, and incident escalation.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to work independently and mentor engineers on integration implementation.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the required VA Public Trust suitability determination.

Preferred Qualifications

- Highly preferred: Direct, hands-on experience supporting the VA Summit Data Platform, including its interfaces, technical dependencies, security boundaries, and operating environment. Related VA enterprise data and analytics experience also receives strong consideration.
- Hands-on Microsoft Azure integration experience, particularly with Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake Storage, and Databricks. Familiarity with Starburst, Collibra, Immuta, or comparable enterprise data integration and governance technologies is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with VA Enterprise Cloud standards, VA architecture governance, PPSM, NIST 800-53, RMF/ATO processes, and federal system interconnection documentation.
- Experience with API management, infrastructure as code, CI/CD, automated testing, monitoring, and Agile/DevSecOps delivery.
- Relevant Azure, cloud networking, security, or integration architecture certifications.
