About the Role
We're hiring an overnight Security Officer for a transitional housing shelter in Sebastopol. This site serves individuals who are moving from homelessness into stable housing. You'll help keep the building safe and secure for residents, staff, and visitors, and work alongside site staff to create an environment that feels safe, supportive, and welcoming.
The right person for this role leads with patience and respect, stays calm under pressure, and treats every resident with dignity.
Schedule
Monday: 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM
Tuesday: 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM
Wednesday: 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM
Must be available for all three overnight shifts, including holidays that fall on scheduled shift days.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct hourly patrols of the entire property, including common areas, hallways, entrances, exits, and the building exterior
- Stay alert for unauthorized individuals, suspicious activity, safety hazards, and property damage
- Manage access control for the building
- Conduct scheduled resident bed checks following site procedures
- Report any discrepancies, unauthorized occupants, or safety concerns to site staff and Dispatch right away
- Use de escalation skills to calmly resolve conflicts and tense situations
- Respond quickly to incidents and provide support during emergencies
- Complete hourly activity reports and document all incidents accurately
- Keep supervisors and team members updated on security concerns
Qualifications
- Valid BSIS Guard Card (required)
- Completion of 40 hours of BSIS training, including Powers to Arrest, with refresher courses up to date and continuing education courses
- Experience working graveyard shifts
- Strong customer service skills and a professional, respectful demeanor
- Ability to stay alert and proactive in high pressure situations
- Experience with de escalation or working with vulnerable populations is a big plus
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during a 12 hour shift
- Ability to complete hourly patrols of indoor and outdoor areas, including stairs
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
