Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School currently has an exciting opportunity for a Lower School Cook. We are looking for a dependable and caring individual who enjoys preparing quality meals and contributing to a welcoming school community. Hourly rate: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour.
Job summary: Help prepare and serve daily lunch meals/ special events while maintaining rigorous sanitation standards and assist the lower school supervisor in all endeavors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare high-quality meals following standard recipes, portion controls, and dietary restrictions.
- Serve lunch to students efficiently during designated meal periods, maintaining a positive and welcoming attitude.
- Set up and break down serving lines, salad bars, and food stations daily.
Kitchen Cleanliness & Sanitation
- Sanitize all cooking equipment, utensils, dishes, and preparation surfaces after every use.
- Deep clean kitchen infrastructure, including floors, counters, walk-in refrigerators, and storage areas.
- Dispose of waste and recycling according to local health department codes and school policies.
Inventory & Safety Compliance
- Monitor food temperatures during cooking and holding phases to guarantee food safety compliance.
- Store food items correctly using the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method to minimize waste.
- Report equipment malfunctions or safety hazards immediately to the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Experience : Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in commercial cooking, school cafeterias, or large-scale catering.
- Certification : Active Food Handlers Card or SERV Safe certification preferred.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of food safety regulations, industrial kitchen equipment, and volume cooking.
- Physical Demands: Ability to stand for up to 8 hours, lift up to 40 pounds, and work in hot or humid environments.
- Interpersonal Skills : Excellent communication skills and a patient, friendly demeanor when interacting with students and school staff
