Database Administrator

POSITION SUMMARY

The Database Administrator is responsible for the availability, performance, integrity and security of the organisation’s database estate. The role covers installation, configuration, monitoring, tuning, backup and recovery of production and non-production database platforms, and the design and maintenance of the data marts that feed business applications and reporting.

The incumbent works closely with the software developers, infrastructure and information security teams to ensure that data is protected, that systems meet agreed service levels, and that database change is delivered in a controlled and documented manner in accordance with established company policies and best practices. The role also serves as the principal point of contact for database matters raised by internal and external auditors, and for database-related engagement with vendors.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or a related discipline.

- At least Four years (4) years’ experience in database administration in a production environment.

- Professional certification such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, or Oracle Certified Professional, is an asset.

KEY COMPETENCIES

- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server administration, including Always On, replication, SQL Server Agent and Database Mail.

- Advanced T-SQL, including query tuning, execution plan analysis and index strategy.

- Strong Working knowledge of Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS)

- Familiarity with cloud database services such as Azure SQL Database or Managed Instance.

- Backup, recovery and high availability design, and demonstrable experience of restore testing.

- Database security administration, including role-based access control, encryption and auditing.

- Scripting knowledge for automation using PowerShell, Python or an equivalent language.

- Management and maintenance of database code within an enterprise source control system.

- Design and development of relational databases, including normalisation and data modelling.

- Understanding of application development practices sufficient to review and advise on database access

- Strong communication and documentation skills

WORKING CONDITIONS

- Overtime and On-call for database incidents.

- Frequently required to work beyond normal hours, including scheduled maintenance windows outside business hours, to achieve deadlines and minimise business disruption.
