About this role

We are looking to hire a mid-senior payment strategist to own how our Brazilian payments operation performs, from our acquirer and provider relationships through to fraud, chargebacks and commercial terms. You will have full ownership of the Brazil market with the independence to set direction rather than execute a plan handed to you, and will report to the Head of Global Payments, in close partnership with the Director of Patient Experience.

This is an ideal role for someone who wants to challenge themselves in a fast-paced environment and manage provider relationships, risk strategy, dispute recovery, refunds and payment performance in our most complex market in order to protect revenue we are currently losing and reduce the cost of every transaction we take. If you like problem-solving and implementing transformative solutions, this role is for you!

What you’ll be doing

- Owning day-to-day relationships with our acquirers, payment service providers and local partners, including the follow-up that only works from inside the market

- Supporting and in time leading commercial conversations on provider pricing and terms

- Designing and running experiments across providers, including authorisation performance and fallback configurations, so that routing decisions are proven rather than asserted

- Carrying our merchant category reclassification through the local approval process with our acquirers, and quantifying what it is worth

- Owning fraud and risk strategy for the market: the rule set in our provider’s risk engine, the balance between blocking and reviewing, identity and verification checks, and the response when we are attacked

- Running chargebacks and disputes end to end, from notification and evidence through representment to net loss, and lifting our recovery rate

- Separating commercial disputes from genuine fraud and treating them differently, including owning refund reporting and the parts of it that need building first

- Monitoring authorisation, conversion and chargeback performance for the market, and telling us where our payments reporting needs to go further

- Setting direction and delivering through existing teams rather than doing all the execution yourself

What we need from you

- A graduate degree in engineering or a similar discipline

- Five to ten years in payments, gained at a bank, acquirer, provider or e-commerce business, including hands-on ownership of payments risk or payments performance in the Brazilian market

- The structured way of working that comes from a product management, project management or consulting background

- Hands-on depth in a risk rule engine, including rules you have retired as well as rules you have written

- Command of chargeback and dispute mechanics: reason codes, representment, how pre-dispute and rapid resolution programmes settle, and scheme monitoring thresholds

- Working knowledge of provider and acquirer commercials: pricing structures, interchange, merchant category classification and the local approval process

- Familiarity with the local landscape: instant and recurring instant payments, installments, and issuer behaviour including unvalidated CVV

- Strong data proficiency, and a willingness to be hands-on with data: you interrogate transaction data yourself rather than waiting for an analyst

- Commercial arithmetic: you can price a false positive as readily as a chargeback, and build a business case that survives scrutiny

- The independence to work without a local payments team above you, with the person accountable for group numbers based in London

- Fluent Portuguese and professional English

- Nice to have: subscription or recurring billing experience where authorisation and capture are separated by a clinical step, provider migration or orchestration experience, identity verification or device intelligence deployments, and a regulated industry background
