Job Summary:
Under the direction and supervision of the Directors and certificated teacher, the Assistant Special Education Teacher is responsible for the supervision, one-on-one instruction, and support of students with mild to moderate disabilities. This position provides classroom support and assists with the implementation of instructional and behavioral plans to help students develop academic, behavioral, social, and daily living skills. Opportunities to move into other positions within the school and special education department are available.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The position includes but is not limited to the following list of representative duties:
- Provide supervision and instruction to students with special needs.
- Provide one-on-one and small-group instruction under the direction and supervision of the classroom teacher.
- Supervise students with special needs during lunch, recess, playground, hallways, and other school activities.
- Provide consistent communication to the Directors, teachers, and other appropriate school personnel regarding students.
- Provide guidance and support to students in a positive manner.
- Follow educational, instructional, behavioral, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) plans under the direction of the assigned teacher.
- Model appropriate academic, social, behavioral, and communication skills for students.
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the classroom teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Assist teachers and other school personnel in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
- Implement instructional programs and lesson plans under the supervision of the assigned teacher, including reading, math, language comprehension, writing, computer skills, and other areas as needed.
- Promote good study habits, student independence, and positive student outcomes.
- Provide instruction and support in individual and group activities, including self-esteem, behavioral skills, and daily living skills.
- Document student activities, behavior, completed assignments, and other information as required.
- Maintain classroom equipment and work areas to help ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Monitor individual and groups of students in a variety of settings, including restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations and direct concerns to the appropriate personnel.
- Assist with special health care needs as directed and trained by appropriate school personnel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Schedule:
- Typical schedule is M, T, W, F: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Th: 8:00 am - 3:00 pm (hours may vary based on campus)

- Able to demonstrate good classroom management skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and diffuse highly emotional or challenging situations
- Ability to provide positive guidance and support to students with varying abilities and needs
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to follow instructional, behavioral, and student support plans
- Experience in Special Education is desired but not required
Education Requirements:
- Successful candidates must meet highly qualified status in one of three ways:
Earned an Associate Degree; or
- Earned 48 college credit hours; or
- Successfully completing a basic academic skills (ParaPro) exam or Project Para Modules within two weeks of hire.
