Structural Steel Field Surveyor
Location: Maryland or Virginia | Field-Based
Job Type: Direct Hire
Starting Pay: $30.00/hour — higher pay available based on experience
Position Overview
We’re looking for a Field Surveyor with structural steel experience to support projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic. You’ll perform field layout and measurements, verify steel positioning, and work alongside erection crews in active construction environments.
Field Responsibilities
- Collect and document accurate site measurements and survey information for construction activities.
- Establish building control lines and layout points for columns and anchor rods.
- Check elevations, embed locations, alignment, and orientation in the field.
- Prepare and maintain as-built drawings based on field conditions.
- Provide layout and alignment support during structural steel erection.
- Verify that steel components are properly positioned and aligned.
- Coordinate with erection crews and other trades to maintain structural plumbness and accuracy.
- Assist with installation and field layout of structural and miscellaneous metals, including stairs and shafts.
- Perform surveying and layout work involving slopes, grades, and structural/miscellaneous metal installations.
- Use surveying and construction technology including Trimble, Bluebeam, CAD, and Microsoft Office .
- Follow jobsite safety requirements and promote safe work practices.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in structural steel erection or field surveying
- Experience with surveying, layout, slopes, and grades for structural and miscellaneous metals
- Hands-on experience with a total station or comparable surveying equipment
- Working knowledge of AISC standards related to building alignment and orientation
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with field crews and other trades
- Willingness to travel regularly between construction sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic region
- Comfortable working at heights, including on aerial lifts and elevated steel floors
- Ability to work effectively in active construction environments
