About the Client:
The company provides membership software for WordPress websites, enabling associations, coaches, publishers, and other organizations to charge for access to online content. It serves approximately 9,000 plugin users and is in the process of expanding from a plugin-only model into direct hosting of customer sites, having already migrated 60 sites onto its custom hosting platform with plans to move all paying customers over time.
As the hosting platform scales from dozens to hundreds and eventually thousands of sites, the founder and senior technical team members have been spending a substantial portion of their working hours on day-to-day system management and troubleshooting. This role exists to take on that operational load so company leadership can focus on sales and marketing as the business grows.
About the Role:
You will manage the company's custom hosting platform, overseeing servers and hosted customer sites as the operation scales from its current base into the hundreds and thousands. You will respond to and resolve customer site issues, applying strong security and stability practices while working within the company's specific hosting configuration.
Beyond day-to-day system management, you will convert recurring issues into clear, documented standard operating procedures within the company's internal playbook system, which is used both by team members and by the company's AI agents. As the platform grows, you will work alongside AI tools—managing and directing AI agents while putting appropriate safeguards in place—to ensure a secure, highly scalable, and well-documented environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Server & Site Management: Administer and maintain the company's custom hosting platform, ensuring the security, stability, and performance of customer sites as the platform scales.
- Issue Troubleshooting: Respond to and resolve customer site issues, diagnosing root causes and applying fixes within the company's specific hosting setup.
- SOP Documentation: Convert recurring problems and fixes into clear, structured standard operating procedures maintained in the company's internal playbook system.
- AI-Assisted & AI-Managed Operations: Use AI tools to support system management, troubleshooting, and documentation, working with the understanding that AI agents will execute routine tasks while you direct and oversee them with robust human safeguards.
- System Scaling Support: Support the transition of sites from plugin-only use to fully hosted status, contributing to a stable process as site volume grows.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work within Slack alongside company leadership and technical staff, flagging risks and recommending safeguards before new features or changes are deployed.
Qualifications & skills :
- Proven Systems Administration Experience: Substantial hands-on experience as a SysAdmin hosting web applications and WordPress environments. We are seeking candidates who have "seen some stuff" and can handle high-stress server issues and site outages with calm, sound judgment.
- Deep Diagnostic Skill: Proven ability to dig deep into complex technical issues rather than just surface-level button pushing or gear turning. .
- AI-First & AI-Management Mindset: Enthusiastic about an operational model where AI tools/agents assist with or perform core tasks under your management. Not skeptical of AI, but experienced in building human safeguards and validation loops around AI outputs.
- Location & Overlap Availability : Strong preference for candidates based in South Africa, Europe, or Latin America (LATAM). Must be able to provide at least 2 hours of work overlap between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM US Eastern Time for synchronous team alignment and handoffs.
- Opinionated Stack Comfort : Willing and able to work within the company's specific hosting configuration rather than defaulting to generic or textbook approaches.
- High-Trust Responsibility: Comfortable being entrusted with root/admin-level access to customer-facing systems and handling that responsibility with discretion and care.
- Strong English Communication: Excellent written English skills for active Slack communication, real-time syncs, and clear SOP creation .
