Description
Want to take a product from workshop-scale prototyping to high-volume mass production? As a Hardware Development Engineer II on the RIVR team at Amazon, you will own the manufacturing and process engineering work needed to scale production capacity from dozens of units to thousands — all while maintaining quality consistency and operational flexibility. This is a hands-on, 2-in-1 role spanning manufacturing engineering and process engineering. You will design assembly and test line layouts, establish process controls and documentation, select equipment and tooling, and drive continuous improvement across the production floor. If you enjoy rolling up your sleeves to solve real production challenges and working closely with external manufacturing partners, this role puts you at the center of that effort.
Key job responsibilities
- Plan, design, and optimize assembly line and testing line layouts for mass production by collaborating with external manufacturing partners, and select the equipment and tooling needed for each facility area.
- Establish and maintain process documentation including P-Flow charts, Control Plans, Work Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures, and process parameter databases, along with Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (P-FMEA).
- Monitor key manufacturing metrics such as cycle time, first-pass yield, downtime, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), scrap rate, and Cp/Cpk levels, and propose data-driven continuous improvement actions.
- Identify manufacturing steps suitable for automation, define deliverables and work processes for integration into Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, and apply lean manufacturing principles including 5S methodology.
- Provide Design for Manufacturing (DFM) guidance to the engineering team, lead vendor communication for custom assembly and test equipment, train operators, and troubleshoot production facility issues.
A day in the life
Your morning might start with a review of overnight production data — checking first-pass yield and cycle time trends to spot anything that needs attention. From there you could head to the production floor to observe a new assembly fixture in action and discuss adjustments with the equipment vendor. After lunch you might draft an updated Control Plan for a process change, then meet with the product engineering team to review a new component design and flag DFM considerations before prototyping begins.

Basic Qualifications
- 4+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
- Experience with prototyping and implementation
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of SolidWorks simulation or Ansys Finite Element analysis tools
- Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume
