High Voltage Engineer Intern

The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher. Our goal is to give students meaningful work that builds on what they are learning in the classroom. Our programs are project based. Students will receive a project at the beginning of the summer and present it in our project expo at the end of the summer. Job Description

Job Summary/Objective:
The purpose of Southwire’s College Programs is to help early career professionals bring together formal learning and

productive work to improve their ability to transition from school to work. Southwire provides interns and co-ops with

“real world” applications of their academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and consideration for employment

after graduation. Each student will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of

study and be responsible for developing a timeline, progress updates, and final delivery in a senior leadership expo.

Note: All new interns and co-ops must begin in the summer rotation.

Key Responsibilities
· Your intern assignment is generally 10-12 weeks, and co-op assignment is generally 16-18 weeks and

will include an assigned project and opportunities to present your work.

· You will also collaborate on other exciting projects and work with talented peers and inspirational

leaders, many of whom began as interns and co-ops themselves.

· You will be provided a robust developmental experience through an immersive onboarding and

offboarding experience, assigned a mentor, networking opportunities, organized events, activities, and

community service /volunteer initiatives.

· You will have the opportunity to impact the future of the organization, all the while being exposed to

a world-class program community.

Long Description

Project Summary

This internship offers an early-career engineering student a hands-on introduction to high voltage engineering at Southwire’s Cofer Technology Center. Working alongside our high voltage engineers and technicians, the intern will learn how high voltage test setups are designed and built, and will gain a foundational understanding of the electrical stresses that insulation systems experience under high voltage. This is a learning-focused role. The ideal candidate is a curious, punctual, and dependable student who listens well, follows instructions carefully, and is eager to learn.

Description of Responsibilities

- Assist engineers and technicians in planning, assembling, and setting up high voltage test setups in a laboratory environment

- Learn and follow high voltage safety practices, including safe work procedures, grounding, clearances, and proper use of personal protective equipment

- Gain introductory exposure to electrical stresses in insulation systems and how they are measured and evaluated

- Help prepare test samples and equipment, and assist with collecting and organizing test data

- Document setups, procedures, and observations clearly using lab notes, sketches, and spreadsheets

- Observe testing in progress to learn how high voltage testing supports product development and quality at Southwire

- Complete a summer project and present the results at the College Programs project expo.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements

- Minimum 2.5 GPA

- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in engineering, physics, or a related field (electrical engineering preferred); sophomore standing preferred

- Must have reliable transportation to and from work

- Eager to learn, with genuine curiosity about electrical and high voltage engineering

- Punctual and dependable, with a strong sense of responsibility for assigned tasks

- Good listener who follows verbal and written instructions carefully, especially safety procedures

- Willingness to work hands-on in a laboratory environment and adhere to all safety requirements

- Comfortable working as part of a team and asking questions when unsure

- Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

- Introductory coursework or projects in physics, circuits, or electronics is a plus, but not required
