This opportunity resides with Warfare Systems (WS) , a business group within HII’s Mission Technologies division. Warfare Systems comprises cyber and mission IT; electronic warfare; and C5ISR systems.

Mission Technologies, a division of HII, is searching for a dynamic Power Interfaces Engineer to join our team in Knoxville, TN. In this pivotal role, you’ll be the architect behind how batteries, power distribution units, controllers, sensors, and converters communicate, cooperate, and come to life as a unified system. If you thrive at the intersection of electrical engineering, system logic, and cutting‑edge technology, this role puts you directly in the driver’s seat.

You’ll define the electrical, logical, and communication interfaces that make advanced power systems safe, scalable, and mission‑ready. Your work will guide component integration, future system adaptability, and next‑generation innovations across complex, high‑energy platforms.

Salary will be commensurate to your appropriate level.

What You'll Do

Build the Blueprint of System Connectivity
• Engineer the electrical, data, and safety interfaces that link batteries, PDUs, converters, sensors, and controllers.
• Develop interface control documents, power‑flow diagrams, signal lists, and communication maps.
• Ensure plug‑and‑play modularity and support evolving system configurations using MOSA principles.

Shape High‑Fidelity Signals & Smart Safety Logic
• Specify analog/digital signal behavior from filtering and timing to fault responses.
• Define and validate communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, Modbus, proprietary serial).
• Engineer safety logic, interlocks, and high‑energy protective behaviors.
• Align interface logic with battery, controls, and power electronics teams.

Drive Innovation Through Trade Studies
• Assess batteries, sensors, controllers, and switching systems for performance and long‑term adaptability.
• Lead interface‑focused trade studies centered on safety, reliability, and environmental resilience.
• Confirm compliance with electrical, thermal, communication, and EMI/EMC standards.

Bring Systems to Life
• Build test plans targeting interface integrity, communication performance, and safety logic.
• Support system bring‑up with real‑time signal verification and controller integration testing.
• Participate in FAT, regression, and fault‑insertion testing to validate system robustness.
• Document results and champion interface improvements.

Own the Documentation That Drives Success
• Develop and maintain ICDs, wiring definitions, signal tables, and safety logic documentation.
• Manage configuration control across multiple builds and revisions.
• Review and refine technical documentation from junior engineers.

Collaborate, Influence, and Lead
• Partner with systems, power electronics, controls, and software teams to align requirements.
• Serve as the interface SME in design reviews and customer engagements.
• Mentor emerging engineers in interface design best practices.

Champion Safety & Standards Compliance
• Ensure interface designs meet NFPA 70E, MIL‑STD‑461, IEEE, and project‑specific requirements.
• Contribute to hazard analyses and risk mitigation for high‑energy systems.

What You Bring

Level 3:

- 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.

Level 4:

- 9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 4 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.

Level 5:

- 15 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 13 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; or 10 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field.

Technical Expertise:

- Deep experience with power system interfaces, batteries/BMS, sensors, controllers, and PDUs

- Strong understanding of AC/DC distribution, safety interlocks, and power electronics

- Hands‑on expertise with communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, serial)

- Skilled in creating ICDs, signal maps, wiring diagrams, and logic definitions

- Experience in system integration and interface verification

- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance

Highly Desired

- Background in high‑power or modular microgrid systems

- Knowledge of MOSA principles

- Familiarity with MIL‑STD‑1399, MIL‑STD‑461, NFPA 70E, IEEE standards

- Professional Engineer (PE) license

- Experience leading interface standards and trade studies

Physical Requirements

May require working in an office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environment. Capable of climbing ladders and tolerating confined spaces and extreme temperature variances.
